Thyroid Nodule

Evening all,

Found this helpful forum whilst falling down a google hole .

I found a lump on the front of my neck whilst on holiday, now I know it's there I can see it, at first I thought it was my Adam's apple (I'm female) but I've teen daughters and a husband who all let me have a feel to compare and it's def a lump. It moves up and down when I swallow, I had a video appointment with a GP who thinks it's a thyroid nodule and has referred me to an ENT surgeon - my appointment with them is on Saturday.

I've read different things about it being good if it moves and isn't hard - I've no idea what a hard or soft lump feels like ‍♀️.

Seems from some reading that the chances are it'll be benign. But my sibling had lymphoma as a teen so I'm extremely nervous to say the least.

I've started thinking I've got some under arm aching when I drink wine - this is a symptom my sibling had so I don't know if it's in my head.

No question really - not sure why I'm posting, just to let it out I suppose. Thanks for reading this far!

  • Hello CassieD,

How did your appointment with the ENT surgeon go? I hope everything went well and that you have more answers by now. I am sure the ENT specialist will have explained everything in detail to you and answered your questions. It's sad what happened to your sibling as a teen but try not to think too much about it as what you have may be totally unrelated - do mention to your doctor or specialist all the symptoms that are bothering you though.

Fingers crossed you feel better now that you have seen the specialist.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello

I could have written this. I've had a few issues with lymph nodes pop up since vaccine. I then found a lump on the front of my throat just above my adam's apple (I am female too!).

I paid for a private scan. Apparently it is scar tissue from when the thyroid moves down when we are little and then grow, that is what was said abouf mine.

    How did you get on?

    xx

  • Hey - thank you for commenting.

it went well he's very sure it's a thyroglossal cyst and said that they're cancerous in very, very rare circumstances. I'm having an ultrasound to confirm and then he's suggested it should be surgically removed as it's quite large.

if the ultrasound shows something looks a bit strange then they'll do a fine needle asperation to check it.

  • Hey x

Have you seen a consultant about it? They're called thyroglossal cysts and can get infected. The consultant explained it exactly the way you've described - it's a lump that's grown on the part of the thyroid from my tongue to the thyroid. They're really common in children but adults can develop them too.

I'm going for a scan to confirm then he's advised to have it removed.

  • Hello,

Sorry, only just saw that you replied, I don't think I got an email to say you had!

When I booked my scan, he said he was a thyroid and neck specialist and was really thorough and he said nothing to worry about at all and said no treatment needed because my thyroid function is spot on.

He didn't even really give a diagnosis but told me about it.

    How big does your feel?

  • Hey :-)

sorry for the delayed reply I didn't see you message either!

It's hard to explain but about a finger and a half wide and round . I just went to measure it for you - it's an inch wide.

  • Hi I've recently just been to the doctors today and he thinks I have a thyroglossal duct cyst. He has referred me to the ENT but could be 4-6 weeks. How long did you referall take was it put down as urgent? I've also been booked in for a ultrasound. I said I did want it removed as I'm worried it would just get bigger. How did yours turn out?
