91-Year-Old Diner Had No One To Talk To, So His Server Sat And Ate With Him

August 23, 2019

Lisa Meilander of Elizabeth Township, Pennsylvania, was eating dinner with her family at Eat'n Park restaurant when a 91-year-old World War II veteran sat down to eat his meal alone.

Lisa shared what happened next in a Facebook post.

"The elderly gentleman was seated in the booth directly across from my family as we ate dinner Saturday night at Eat'n Park in Belle Vernon. We really didn't see him come in. But we did notice when our server, Dylan, dropped to one knee to look him eye-to-eye as he got ready to take his order.

The man apologized for not hearing too well. He had forgotten to put in his hearing aids. He talked about how he lost his hearing during his time in the war. He was 91 years old with many stories to tell. Dylan patiently listened giving him his full attention.

Eventually the man apologized for talking so much.

'I'm alone now,' he said, 'and I don't often have someone to talk to.'

Dylan smiled and said he enjoyed listening.

He then helped him figure out what to order and left to take it to the kitchen. It was a touching site. I wanted offer to pay for the man's dinner, but before I could flag down Dylan, a man seated at a nearby booth asked Dylan to bring him his check.

'Someone's already taken care of it,' Dylan smiled. I guess we weren't the only ones eavesdropping on the conversation.

After the man received his food Dylan came back to say he was on a break. He asked if he could sit with the gentleman as he ate. As we left the restaurant the two of them were conversing and many people seated nearby were smiling. It was a touching sight.

With all of the negative stories about our youth today this was a breath of fresh air. I wonder if I would have been as kind and attentive if I were the one working there. One thing's for sure, if you are ever at Eat'n Park in Belle Vernon, ask for Dylan. If he's your waiter you're certain to get great service."

Uber Driver Surprises Fast Food Employee With A New Dress And A Gift Card

August 15, 2019

An Uber driver in Buffalo helped a fast-food employee who had been a passenger in her car, after learning she was waiting until Christmas to buy new clothes.

Lamiyah Jabbar picked up Diane earlier this month and that's when she learned of the woman's financial struggles.

"During the whole ride, she was talking about how she takes care of her grandkids and how she hasn’t had money to buy herself anything in so long and she was actually going to wait until Christmas," Lamiyah said.

So, she dropped Diane off at Tim Hortons and went to Old Navy to buy Diane a dress and also picked up a $50 Visa gift card.

"This was on my mind from the moment she got out my car, so I had to contribute can you imagine waiting till Christmas just to get a robe, house shoes and a outfit for church, we tend to take things for granted, but why not help someone else if you can," Lamiyah wrote on Instagram.

Metallica Helps Build Romania's First Children's Hospital

August 20, 2019

Metallica has donated 250,000 Euros (about $279,000 US) to a Romanian association building the country's first children's hospital.

The donation to the nonprofit organization Daruieste Viata ("Give Life") was announced just prior to the band's sold out concert in Bucharest.

"The donation made by Metallica has a special meaning to our project. On one hand, their music inspires and touches so many Romanians, and at the same time so many Romanians are inspired by and contribute to the establishing of the first Pediatric Oncology and Radiotherapy Hospital in Romania, in order to give children with cancer a chance to live," said Carmen Uscatu, President of Daruieste Viata Association.

"On the other hand, the contribution of Mastercard, that pledged a sponsorhip worth €1,000,000 to #NoiFacemUnSpital initiative, has been a real drive in inspiring a legend like Metallica to contribute to our cause as well. We are grateful to all who make this project possible."

Like St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in the US, the Romanian pediatric hospital will also be funded exclusively by donors.

The estimated date of launch is set for the end of 2020.

Dropkick Murphys Perform Special Show For 3-Year-Old Cancer Patient

August 27, 2019

The Dropkick Murphys performed a private show for a three-year-old boy named Quinn who is battling cancer and can't leave his home.

Quinn was diagnosed with a brain tumor in February. He has been stuck in his house in Weymouth, MA, since June, forced to stay indoors after three rounds of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant depleted his immune system.

When the Dropkick Murphey's heard about Quinn's story, they made a pit stop to his home to perform a private show.

"A few of the guys were able to sneak over and play some songs for an awesome little fella named Quinn yesterday," the band wrote on Instagram. "Quinn has a wonderful family and they are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

Quinn's family also started a Facebook page to update friends and family about his progress, and to thank everyone for their support to bring awareness about Medulloblastoma, the type of tumor that doctors removed from Quinn's brain stem.

Retiring FBI Agent Has Surprise Reunion With Kidnapped Baby He Rescued As A Rookie

August 26, 2019

FBI Special Agent Troy Sowers' colleagues surprised him at his retirement party by inviting the baby he rescued 22 years ago, who is now a Marine corporal.

In 1997, newborn Stewart Rembert was abducted from the hospital by a woman impersonating a nurse.

Rembert was found 19 hours later in a box next to a restaurant dumpster in Tacoma, Wash., by Sowers, a rookie FBI agent in his first few months on the job.

On Friday, the FBI bid farewell to Sowers, who is retiring after 22 years of service. His colleagues invited Rembert.

"It's crazy to think that without his efforts, I wouldn't even be here today," Rembert told NBC News. "I wouldn't be a Marine. My family wouldn't be the same... I'm just super excited and honored to meet this man today."

Sowers said the reunion was "one of the best surprises I've ever had."

Boy Chooses To Meet His Bone Marrow Donor Over A Trip To Disney World

August 30, 2019

Six years ago, 7-year-old Gabriel Smith received a life-saving bone marrow transplant at St. Louis Children's Hospital.

Last week, Gabriel met the man who helped save his life -- and he gave up a trip to Disney World to make it happen.

Gabriel was diagnosed as an infant with aplastic anemia. Doctors discovered he had bone marrow failure and needed a transplant.

Luckily, a match was waiting halfway around the world: 25-year-old Dennis Gutt, a carpenter in Germany.

"They found Dennis through the Be the Match registry and on the day of the transplant they told us he was a 19-year-old from Europe," Gabriel's mom, Lauren Smith told GMA. "That's all they were allowed to tell us."

Gutt agreed to the operation and went on with his life, not knowing what happened with his donation.

On October 16, 2013, 14-month-old Gabriel received the life-saving bone marrow transplant.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation approached the Smith family earlier this year about granting a wish to Gabriel.

"At first, he said, 'Take my donor to meet Mickey'," Smith told CNN. "But we couldn't do that, so he was asked to choose one: Meet your donor or go to Disney. He chose to meet his donor, Dennis, without any hesitation."

Make-A-Wish Illinois arranged for Gutt to fly from his hometown in Germany to Illinois to meet Gabriel and his family.

"He is part of our family now," Smith said. "He bonded instantly with Gabriel and our other two kids, Ebby and Xavier."

The Smith family plans to stay in touch with Gutt through social media until they meet again.

"We have plans that if we ever do get to Disney World, he's coming with us," Smith said. "We want him to go because he deserves everything that we can do for him."

Jonas Brothers Surpise Fan In Hospital Who Missed Concert For Chemo Treatment

September 2, 2019

Hours before their concert in Hershey, Pennsylvania, the Jonas Brothers made a pit stop for a fan.

Lily Jordan, 16, had jokingly invited the band to come visit her at Penn State Children's Hospital, where she's receiving chemotherapy treatment for cancer.

"I was supposed to be at your Hershey concert tomorrow but instead I'm across the street doing chemo," Lily wrote with a selfie on Instagram. "If y'all wanted to pop in I'll give you my room number."

People started sharing her post and tagging the Jonas Brothers. Sure enough, it reached them.

The brothers visited Lily in the hospital on the day of the concert. Despite missing the concert, Lily said she had the time of her life meeting them.
