T-junction wound pus under dressing?

Hi, I had lumpectomy with reduction (therapeutic mammoplasty) 3.5 weeks ago. Saw my surgeon last week and she removed the dressings but there were a couple of little holes (wounds not completely closed) so she put tape on them and I'm due to see her on Tuesday to check them. One area (the T-junction) was bothering me all evening, felt like the band of my post-surgical bra was irritating the area so I had a look and it seems like there is a lot of pus under the dressing and it smells slightly unpleasant. I don't have a temperature and it doesn't appear more red or hot than it has been up till now. I've called 111 and am waiting for a clinician to call me back. Just wondering if anyone reading this has had this problem and can advise. Thanks. Amy x

  • Hi Amy,

I am sorry to hear that you are having this bother. I hope that by now you've spoken to someone from 111 and that they were able to help you.

If you are still worried,I would suggest that you phone your breast care nurse. They are very helpful in situations like these.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply [@laraj]‍ and [@Jolamine]‍ . I appreciate it. 111 suggested I call my surgery. The GP suggested seeing the nurse to take a swab and redress it so I made an appointment for this afternoon. In the meantime I called my BCN to let her know and check I was doing the right thing. She checked with my surgeon and said it could wait until I see ther tomorrow and she would take a swab anyway, but to go to the practice nurse if I was concerned. It's not looking angry and I don't have a temperature so I've cancelled the nurse appt and will wait until tomorrow. My husband suggested that perhaps I hadn't dried myself well enough after showering and the moisture has opened the wound up again. He's probably right :)

Thanks again. Take care, Amy x

    Hi Amy,

You've done the right thing. I found it easier to contact my BCN with any problems that arose, as it's less complicated when you keep within your breast care group, who are used to dealing with this.

I hope that all goes well tomorrow.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Lara, thanks for your message. The appointment was made after seeing my surgeon last week. She wanted to check on my wounds again. I've not been in any pain, thankfully. Just a bit itchy and irritable. Xx

  • Hi Jolamine, thanks for your message. My BC nurses are great but it was late last night that I realised my wound was oozing and I guess I panicked a bit thinking it was infected and would need to be checked straightaway. It was good of the surgery to offer to see me today but I cancelled the appointment. I'm sure someone else made good use of it! Xx

  • Update: I saw my surgeon today. She removed the dressings and said it looked infected but otherwise ok. She also noted the nasty smell. She took a swab, cleaned and redressed the area with a silicone dressing. She has also prescribed a course of antibiotics and will see me again next Tuesday. I think it will leave a nasty scar/dip in the long term but fortunately it's in the crease under my breast so will not be noticeable.
