One of my consultants has mentioned this option as I have primary bowel cancer and secondary liver metastases and small nodules on lung has anyone got any info on this would be good maybe to have a big operation rather than 2 seperate

Hello Tigercub and thanks for posting,

I think the main advantage of combined surgery is in having only one operation, so only having to be admitted into hospital once and having a single recovery period.

I know that research has looked at having surgery to remove a primary bowel cancer and secondary liver cancer surgery at the same time. In the right patient, this is thought to be no less safe and just as effective when compared to operating in sequence. I assume that your case falls within the right parameters for this approach which is why your consultant mentioned it as an option.

I don’t know how often surgeons operate on a bowel primary with secondary cancers in the liver and the lung, all at the same time. As far as I can tell this hasn’t been as well researched.

I think really the best person to ask about this would be someone from your surgical team. They know what is planned from the surgical angle and are in the best position to tell you the pros and cons and what the alternatives are.

If no one posts with any experience of these sorts of operations, you could try the forum of another charity, Beating Bowel Cancer.

Do give us a call if you would like a chat. Our number is 0808 800 4040 and we are here from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Best wishes,

Julia

I was treated for bowel cancer 18 months ago. I have just been diagnosed with secondary liver and and lung mastices. I have been told they cannot operate due to the cancer now being in all three area's. What was the outcome from your oncologist?
