Surgery cancelled

I was diagnosed with breast cancer 1 month ago. My surgery was scheduled for this Thursday but when I went on Thursday there to get markers they done more biopsies. The results aren't back so I got a call yesterday to say surgery is cancelled so here I am just waiting and feeling very deflated. I know it's best to get surgery right first time but frustrated they left biopsies so close to surgery date. Is this something that happens? Feeling in limbo.

  • I'm really sorry to hear your surgery was cancelled due to more biopsies needing to be taken Twinmum81.

I think it's only natural to be feeling disappointed and let down at the moment but fingers crossed it won't be long until they have all the information they need and your surgery can go ahead once more.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in this situation will share their experiences and advice with you soon but in the meantime, if you'd like to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses then do give them a call. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

  • HI [@Twinmum81]‍

So sorry you find yourself on here but when I read your post I wanted to give you some reassurance. I was diagnosed right at the beginning of the pandemic and no date was given for surgery at the time as they were setting up hospitals that would be cancer treatment centres and covid free. I was plunged into menopause with medication and put on letrozole. I waited over 6 weeks for my op and then a further 2 weeks as I had to isolate etc. I am pleased to say I am all good now had a lumpectomy, SNB, and radiotherapy. My cancer was her2 neg, ER +ve. The delay in having my operation did not affect me adversely thank goodness so please be reassured that a further few weeks wait can still result in successful treatment.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you so much for replying. Glad to hear you're all good now. I got a call yesterday reassuring me I'll have my op within the next few weeks as my results came back. I do have another cancerous area so glad they found that before they operated. Mine is her2 neg, pr +ve er +ve. Feeling better after speaking to my consultant.

  • Hi Twinmum81

I'm sorry that your surgery has been cancelled - it must be frustrating and worrying. But at least your consultant now knows exactly what they are dealing with having taken the time to do more biopsies and wait for the results. I'm sure you'll get a date very soon.
