Subungual Melanoma

Hello Tbdix and thank your question.

Subungual melanoma arises from the tissues in the nail bed. So if there is only black pigment in your nail and not the nail bed, this does not sound like melanoma.

Having said this, I am nurse and not a dermatology doctor and although I have a working knowledge of this subject I am not a expert and sometimes unusual things can happen. For example, melanoma that does not contain any pigment, but this is very rare. I can appreciate that you are trying to work out what the biopsy results might show, but the final answer rests with these results. But I don't think that you need to be  overly worried.

Please get back to us if you have any other questions. If you would like to telephone the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

All the best,
