Stinging after BCG treatments for Bladder cancer

Hi everyone,

I'm posting on behalf of my Dad. He's had 6 sessions of BCG and is now all clear. The last session ended 6 months ago. There are still inflammed parts in his bladder caused by the BCG. He is still having stinging and stinging when weeing. There is no infection. Does anyone have any suggestions on what he can take to reduce the stinging please? He drinks lots of water and eats no spicy food etc. He's had antibiotics and takes paracetamol. It is really getting him down. But we are very thankful he is clear. Thank you very much for your help.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your dad's situation. The stinging he is feeling must be miserable to live with so I can appreciate your question.

You explain that drinking 2 -3 litres of water and taking paracetamol is not working. Some people say that drinking cranberry juice can help however these is no scientific data to back that up, although it would do no harm to try. Also I wonder if your dad could take ibuprofen either in place or with paracetamol.  If he does want to try this please do read the patient information leaflet in the pack about taking it.

I am afraid it is difficult for me to suggest anything else. Therefore I do think that if he has not let his urology team, in particular his urology nurse specialist, know how this is still affecting him that he should, as they may be able to help.

You might also want to contact another cancer charity called Fight Bladder Cancer, they may be able to help, you can see their website and how to contact them here

I hope your dad's symptoms get better.  Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
