Squamous cell cancer of the larynx

My specialist says as I have T4 N1 M0 cancer of my larynx, surgery with RT and CT the only way forward but has anyone had just RT and CT only and what was the results?

  • Welcome to the forum Guernseydonkey.

Hopefully some of our members who have had these treatment options will reply soon to share their experiences with you but I also wanted to put you in touch with [@suchipoo]‍ as their mum had a similar choice to make at the beginning of the year and fingers crossed they'll pop on to let you know what happened.

You may be able to find recent discussions about this type of cancer to join in on by using the 'sarch forum' option in the blue bar above as well.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Sorry I’m not really active on here. My mum ended having to have surgery (total laryngectomy) and RT and CT. A year on she is doing really well, she has a great quality of life and nothing gets in her way from doing everything she did before and more. She saw her consultant this morning as a follow up, he’s really pleased with her and she’ll soon be moving up to 3 monthly follow ups, as opposed to 6weekly. Take care, stay strong x
  • Hi Guernsey

you will find a lovely bunch of us on the throat cancer page . Lots of help and advice . My husband is just going through treatment for Larynx cancer . He chose radiotherapy. Although lazer and more surgery is less evasive  with side effects etc there is a chance you could lose your voice and end up having radio anyway . Join us all in throat cancer thread were you will meet a lovely bunch going through the same as you . Much love Ginny x PS treatment for this cancer yields very positive results.

  • Thank you for your reply. I have decided on the Chemo Radiotherapy route after some interesting discussions between the surgeons and oncologists! I have already had 3 heavy Chemo sessions which shrunk my Tumour to nothing. I start Chemoradiotherapy on Tuesday for 6 weeks.

  • Hi Ginpo

thanks for the reply, I have been researching my disease and was hoping for some feedback on people who have the same cancer as I have.

I have HPV 16 positive cancer of the Supraglottis which I am told is T4 N1 M0 and classed as locally advanced! The surgeons want me to have my larynx, wind pipe and food pipe removed plus Radiotherapy and possible chemo! After discussion with the Oncologist he told me that Chemoradiotherapy is as successful as surgery. I decided after much research to go the non surgery route and started with 3 Chemo sessions which shrunk my Tumour to nothing and my node to normal size. I start Chemoradiotherapy for 6 weeks on Tuesday.

The surgeons had told me the tumour had invaded my cartilage but now the tumour has gone the CT and MRI scan shows that has not happened. Also the scans show no further cancer in my organs. The surgeons are of the opinion my cancer will return.

I have made my decision and going with my instincts.

Have you any members who have had similar experience to me?

    Thanks.

  • My husbands is T1  N0 spindle cell of the glottis ... he was told surgery and radiotherapy was the way forward and has very positive results . From what I understand chemo is given if it’s spread to the Lymph  of 3 rounds so that is what you are having. I think the HPV one has even better results . So basically your tumor  is a bit bigger than my husbands and nothing of what they said to you was said to him. He had his 15th session today 18 to go. Brutal treatment but it’s got to be worth it . Keep in touch on this chat page and everyone will be routing for you , with lots of encouragement. X x PPS my husband did have as much of the growth removed I’m guessing that’s the same with you & just having that surgery his voice came back ( that was his only symptom of larynx cancer a lost voice) although he is losing it again now due to treatment but  all normal and will return once again ! He was offered laser and more surgery but there was a risk of voice impairment or loss so he went with his gutt too and opted for radio.
