Sore throat

Hi,

I have had a sore throat/ neck for the last 4 months. I am in total agony throughout the day and will stop me from carrying out daily jobs. I am constantly feeling weak, faint and dizzy. I also have this feeling like I have something stuck in my throat and when I eat it feels like it gets stuck. Throughout the night I sometimes struggle to breath and have noticed how loud my breathing gets. I have had blood tests all came back fine then had a camera down my nose. Doctor said there was no obvious lump or anything sinaster apart from swollen tonsils which he didn't seem bothered about. He has now referred me to have another camera and will be asked to swollow food and drink in order for them to see what is going on when I do eat.
I am beginning to get worried as I don't believe they are taking it serious enough and just think it's a sore throat. I am constantly tired and fed up of not getting answers after suffering for a long 4 months.
please can someone help? Has anyone else had the same problems and symptoms?

  • Hello Sophlouise,

Poor you it sounds like you have had a really difficult time with it all and I can understand why you need to have some answers now. I hope that the tests the doctor ordered will shed some light on what the problem is exactly. If you do feel though that you are not getting anywhere or that you are not being taken seriously, you could maybe try and get a second opinion. You can find out more about this here.

I hope you feel better soon and that you also hear from others here who have been through this before.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi,

I've had similar to you since January. Had camera like you also gastroscopy. Ent camera was fine except mild reflux, gastroscopy all good at top end with stomach inflammation but samples taken came back ok . lump feeling still there. Gp keeps saying anxiety, but it hurts and I'm fed IP with it. Have you thought about a neck and thyroid ultrasound? I'm considering one privately. The cost is just under £200 including the report.

    Let me know your thoughts.

  • Hi Richard,

thank you for your reply! I'm so glad I'm not the only one that has no answers. I'm only 19 so I have experienced severe anxiety before but when I was around 17. I am definitely not feeling anxious at all and when it all started I was in a really good place and healthy. How did they test for mild reflux and what symptoms were you getting with that? Have you gone back to your GP over time and mentioned your still getting the pain? I have thought a lot about an neck and thyroid ultrasound but usually if the doctor is concerned about the symptoms or what he’s seen using the camera he will order the ultrasound, but he hasn’t offered it to me at all. I don’t want to seem a pain if nothing is wrong. I’m doing an apprenticeship so money isn’t the best...

I am completely lost on what to do or even suggest! Do I just give up and hope it all passes?

  • Hi Sophlouise,

I would ask for a referral to ENT to have the specialists check over if not done already.

You mentioned camera/scope down nose and assume that was done by ENT consultant?

There can be many innocent reasons for your symptoms and being referred does not automatically mean anything sinister. Given the time you have been exoeriencing this its best to get checked out though.
I would try and stay off google if you can as there is so much mis information out there as well as being out of date. Its also easy to diagnose the worst case scenario on any symtom on google.

The food and drink along with scope might be done by Speech Therpapist specialist and see how all is funtioning.
If it is a case of swollen tonsils and they continue to bother you and causing such discomfort, then having them removed might be an option for them.

We are all different and cannot diagnose on here but would advise if perists to ask for rererral as can take a few GP appointments to have them go down that route in my experience.

I hope your next appointment is soon and they can test with scope again and with food/milk to evaulate.

Let us kow how you get on and/or let me know if I can help any further.

    regards

  • I was referred to the ENT after speaking to my GP  she seemed concerned so my referral only took a week until I was seen. I saw them last week and like I said all seemed okay apart from swollen tonsils but in my eyes they don’t seem swollen enough to be taken out even though they are causing me to be in extreme pain  I know they are very fussy about removing tonsils now and I could be on a long waiting list for months. I’m sure the ENT said that he would refer me to another ENT. I may be wrong though my head was all over the place on the day. Have you had the same symptoms before? I just want to know what’s wrong with me so I can deal with it even if that’s through medication. To be completely honest I don’t think ENT are bothered about seeing me again.

Thank you all so much for your help I really do appreciate it! Can't thank you enough. I didn't realise how amazing this group was!

  • Hi there,

Ok well its good you have been seen by ENT and yes ive had a few issues in this area but again we are all different so the main this is getting you checked properly and getting to the bottom of whats causing you to be in such pain. Tonsils can cause quite a bit of discomfort .
It may be that ENT consultant has referred you to Speech and language therapist who will do some tests. Basically involves giving you a some banana/ milk/ digestive biscuit to measure if you are swollwing them normally or if any blockage etc, Again all very painless but lets them see your throat area funtioning while eating/drinking and take from there.
You are very young and not normally assosiated with anything sinister and hopefully something like swollen glands etc but you should also not be suffering the way you describe and need some anwers.

Persevere as its not uncommon for GP's to dismiss/ treat with anti biotics but you need furthre checks by specialists if symptoms persist as this is outwith the gp skillset.
Let's hope your next appointment with your further tests with food/drink will enlighten a little more and get to the bottom of as you cant just be left in pain with symtoms you describe and they need to both find an explanation and resolution.

Let me know how you get on at your appointment and what they establish and take from there,

I agree that having these symtoms and not knowing and having persistently bothering you must be cuasing you some considerable angst as well as discomfort and either GP and or ENT/Speech Therapist specialist tests should proving you with a proper dignosis and treat if appropriate.

Hope helps meantime, but keep in touch re progress and I'll help where i can

    regards

  • Thank you so much! That all makes a lot of sense now and hopefully they will get to the bottom of it all. I will keep you updated. Thank you again!
