Sore eyes

Since having docetaxil my eyes have been really sore. They weep constantly and oncologist gave me gel tears back when i was having fec-t they used to help, but now seem to do nothing...and my eyes really really sore...has anyone else had this side effect and if so how did you soothe them please?

  • Hi Danni,

Yeah I suffered with this. Was horrible. Constantly looked like I'd spent all day and night crying. I was told it just a part of the side effects and it will pass. Wasn't given anything. Good news is it passes quite quickly after you finish the chemo. I just bought some eye drops from savers and it seemed to take the of itches and dryness away. Give some a try.

Thanku for your reply.  Well he's prescribed me Gel Tears but don't seem to be working anymore and left eye is really puffy and sore more than right. What sort of things did you use from savers...and did you need to ask if you can use it first?

  • I didn't ask to be honest but it might be an idea to. I can't remember which ones they were. Something for sore bloodshot eyes in a green bottle. I don't think it will do you any harm to try an eye drop or speak to a pharmacist maybe x

  • Spoke to oncologist today and he said to stop gel tears and not to try anything else but cotton wool soaked in warm water 3-4 times a day bathe them...hoping this works. Think it maybe herceptin causing watering of eyes and found out today got to have that every 3rd week for a year as injection!

If don't mind me asking what stage are you at and what treatments have you had?

It's nice to chat to people going thru similar things.

  • Hi,

    Course I don't mind :-)

I finished my docetaxel end of October and now like you have herceptin every 3 weeks for the next year. I go to the hospital for a drip...Next one due this Thursday but starting in the new year district nurses are coming out to give that at home. Can't say I had sore eyes at all since the herceptin. I think it will definitely clear up in it own time. It's just a case of dealing with it as much of a pain as it is. I had my mastectomy 8 weeks ago and due to start radiotherapy on 27th of Dec for 16 rounds then all treatment is over with thank God. Just need to keep fingers crossed the cancer stays away!

How far along are you with regards to treatment?

Finished last of chemo yesterday! Start herceptin injections every 3rd wk on 2nd Jan for a year. Does this mean my hair won't grow back till that year up do u know? Do u get many side effects from just injection herceptin?

My surgeon n oncologist getting together in January to discuss my masectomy and wether I will need radiotherapy too.

How long did ur radiotherapy last for?

Yeah it is a pain but worth it end I guess.

I have stage 2 non aggressive breast cancer, n it's the one that doesn't feed off oestrogen if that makes sense lol.

  • Hi,

You're hair should grow back as herceptin doesn't affect it. My hair started growing back once when I started on the docetaxel and now it's pretty thick although very grey. Can't say I've noticed any side effects from it at all which is good as my side effects from the docetaxel where pretty horrible.

My radiotherapy starts on the 28th of December and it's every week day til the 18th of January. A pain as I'm car less at the mo so have to get the bus every day for a 10 minute appointment. Not ideal.

Mines is stage 3 non invasive ductal cancer her2+. It's pretty aggressive which is why they are doing the radiotherapy. Can't wait til it's all over and I can put the nightmare behind me :-)

Yeah they not sure if I need radiotherapy just yet they going to decide in January after some more scans etc.

Glad to here hair growth starts even whilst on herceptin lol.

At the end of day guess ur in same thought process as me...do what they need to so we get better! I too can't wait for it all to be behind me so I can get on with my life n start being the good mum I was to my children...they have been soo resilent thru all this n my youngest only 6 bless.

    Take care

  • Hi Candice

I have suffered for the last 20 months dealing with sore eyes despite informing nurses and my oncologist about this.  Eventually I was given Mellamose eye drops which do help and told to bathe with water.  I am still suffering from this problem but this does help a lot.

  • Im sure you're still being a good Mum. Its so difficult when your mind is so preoccupied. Do your children understand whats going on? My daughter is 9 and I told her Mummy wasnt well. She knew the cancer word and cried a little but now she doesnt even mention it. In fact she has replaced the cancer word with "bananas" LOL. I have been getting some pain in my boob exactly like when the tumor was there....so went for an ultrasound yesterday. She said there is a shadow so I had 3 biopsies on it which I get the results for soon..... Could anyone actually be that unlucky for it to come back so soon??!!!! Gonna be a long 10 days xx
