Just to let you know the EHIC card has a Facebook help page where you can post a question and get an answer from one of their experts. 
 
 The EHIC health card entitles you, your spouse and any dependent children to reduced cost (or sometimes free) emergency treatment only. However, this card does not cover all costs in all of the EEA countries, nor does it cover ambulance or repatriation costs. The card is not an alternative to travel insurance. It will not cover any private medical healthcare or costs, being flown back to the UK, or lost or stolen property. Therefore, it is important to have both an EHIC and a valid private travel insurance policy.
 
The card gives access to reduced-cost or free medical treatment from state healthcare providers. This includes treatment of a chronic or pre-existing medical condition that becomes necessary during your visit. The card also covers routine medical care for people with pre-existing conditions that need monitoring.

Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will enable you to access the necessary state-provided healthcare in Spain at a reduced cost, or sometimes for free when on a temporary stay. The Spanish health authority determines what treatment is considered necessary and cannot wait until your return to the UK. It also covers you for treatment of pre-existing medical conditions in Spain
 
All Clear Travel on: 0845 250 5350 will provide cover if you have a terminal prognosis, providing it is longer than 6 months after the date of return.

Please go and take your short break. It will do you the power of good. Northern Spain is lovely in May. and the change may boost your low energy levels. Get insurance even if it doesn't include you condition but you may be surprised that you can get cover. My wifes cover is high for an incurable disease £90 for a short break as opposed to £16 if her condition is not covered. Try MIA Insurance, RIAS, Staysure, Goodtogo, Pavey Group.

Go for it - but get some travel insurance (being incurable just puts the premium up). There's some useful info on this thread.

Thank you all.  On Friday I tried the Money Saving Expert website for cancer travel insurance and for 4 days the cheapest they offered was £1095.00.  Kimchoson, I will try your suggestions and those others suggested. Many thanks.

If you havent gone on holiday already check out this site, it specialises in people with existing medical conditions. insurancewith dot com (you work it out) I dont think commercial links are allowed. I have existing cancer, recent surgery and radiotherapy. My quote was £34 for a week to France. The excess was £250.

Hope this is useful for others here trying to get insurance for a much needed break away.

Thanks for everone's replies re insurance, I am checking it all out just in case I get a chance for another holiday. Really, really helpful.  I wouldnt recommend going away without out it, it made me a bit on edge.  :-)
