Results on the day of a Colonoscopy

Hi,

I have had rectal bleeding and my GP has arranged a Colonoscopy for this coming Saturday.  The problem with Saturday is that my wife will be out of the country so whilst I can be picked up she won’t be with me either when I speak to the doctors after the colonoscopy or on Saturday evening.   How detailed can the initial results be? I know they could say there was nothing found, polyps or fissures but is it possible they could say that I definitely have cancer? If that’s the case it’s not something I want to go through alone.

Thanks

Pete

  • Hi PeteSid. Welcome to the forum.

They will usually tell you everything they know.  So if it looks all clear they'll tell you, or if it looks suspicious they'll tell you, and if they see cancer they'll tell you.  The only thing they can't tell you is the result of any pathology tests on samples - you'll have to wait a few weeks for this.

It's a difficult position to be in and only you can know whether or not you want to be accompanied if you should hear bad news (and we're all rooting for you).  I think in your position I would try to arrange to be accompanied by a friend.

  • Thanks for the reply.  She might cancel her trip but if not I will definitely line someone up.  :|
