Recent diagnosis - please help

Hi. My very close family member has recently been sent to hospital as thy have signs of something very wrong. After various tests, the CT can revealed a mass in a section of the bowel which shows a lot of inflammation. When I tried speaking with the consultant away from the family member, thy wouldn’t talk to me because of patient confidentiality. The consultant wouldn’t go into it much, and wouldn’t give me an answer if this had spread into other areas. If this was the case would she not have said another lump is found in another organ? I know there are many treatment options out there but the impression I got was that it wasn’t looking positive.

If someone can give clarity if it sounds operable I’d appreciate it. Me and the family are worried sick for her.

Thank you.

  • Welcome to the community Myst3ry.

If you're able to get your close family member's consent the doctors will then be able to talk to you freely about their diagnosis and answer your questions so it may be worth having a chat with your close family member to see if they're happy for you to talk to their consultant without them being present.

I hope your close family member consents so you're able to get the answers you are seeking at this time.

    All the best,

  • Hi, thanks for the response.

In general terms, if inflammation shows up with a mass, what does this/can this mean? Does this mean it has just caused a bit of irritation in that area, or something else?

I would rather just get the background knowledge without worrying my family member about giving consent.

    Thank you.

  • Hi Myst3ry,

I'm not medically trained so I can't answer your questions I'm afraid.

You're more than welcome to give our cancer nurses a quick call about this on 0808 800 4040 (lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m -5p.m) but ultimately your family member's medical team are in the best position to give you background knowledge as they have access to their medical files.

    Kind regards,
