Reasons for endoscopic biopsy

Hi all, I've joined as I am gathering as much information as I can possibly retain. A bit of info... my mom (68) was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on 18th October this year. 9 days previous to her diagnosis, she had a great deal of pain and discomfort in her abdomen so I suggested she go to the doctors in case it was her appendix or a hernia. She had an ultrasound the following Thursday and was told she had pancreatic cancer with signs on her liver on the Friday. Last week, she had a CT scan on Monday and was called on Friday to go to hospital urgently as they found a clot on her lung. Injections were sent home with her. Her CT results have shown that the cancer has spread to liver and lung. They want to do an endoscopic biopsy this Thursday and I just wondered why this procedure is necessary if she has already been diagnosed. If anyone can inform me as to what this procedure tells doctors, it would be a great help as google is confusing me. Thanks so much xxx

  • Hello Laura

A biopsy is usually done so that the Consultant can see exactly what type of cancer it is and to help decide what treatment options may be suitable for your Mum.

We've got some information on our website here about biopsy for pancreatic cancer
I hope this helps but if you'd like to talk to one of our nurses about any questions you may have then give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday to friday 9am to 5pm.
