Radiotherapy and breast implants

Hello

I have been recently diagnosed with a tubular grade 1 cancer.

Following a successful lumpectomy, I am now waiting for my Sentinel biopsy results to determine any other treatment.

I have had breast implants for quite some years and understand that these might get damaged during radiotherapy - I have already been told that this might not be the option to take.  However, I want to ensure that any cancer cells that might possibly still be there are eradicated.

Are there any ladies out there who have had the same issue?

Thank you in advance.

  • Hi Tara

i was diagnosed with grade 2 IDC in august.   Following lumpectomy I've just completed 15 sessions of whole breast radiotherapy plus additional 5 booster sessions (literally 5 days ago).    I have implants (9 years old) and like you was a little concerned about impact treatment would have on them.   Good news is that so far mine have been ok.   I am very red and have started to get some open sores, skin peeling and tenderness (particularly under armpit) but no effect on implant.   Boob has swollen (and looks very perky) but I'm told all of this is normal at this stage.  I'm told that scar tissue around implant may tighten over time and breast will reduce in size but overall I'm pleased so far that it's held up.   I would definitely recommend no underwired bras for a while and try to not wear any bra as much as possible (together with loose clothing).   Tight fabric does rub and cause irritation.   You probably won't notice anything until mid way through treatment and it does get worse after treatment has finished.   Wishing you all the best xx

  • Hello Diggergirl,

Thank you so much for your detailed response which has been really helpful.

I shall see my consultant this week and see what he says.

I keep my fingers crossed for you that it all works out alright with the implants and best wishes for the future. X
