Post op feelings

Hello.

I'm 3 days post op and can't believe how rubbish I feel pains when swolllowing, excessive tiredness, tearfulness etc... are these all normal? Never had a General Anaesthetic before.

  • Hello Kazzie,

I am one of the enquiry nurses, our moderator Renata asked us if we could post anything on your thread.

The NHS Choices website has some information about the usual side effects from a general anesthetic (GA) at this link.

A sort throat can occur after a GA, so this may be the cause of the painful swallowing.  I expect everyone is different and some people probably take longer to recover from a GA, but as well as the GA, there is the stress of having breast cancer and the operation to consider.  However hard anyone tries to stay calm, having surgery almost always causes some stress and stress can cause fatigue and some emotional upset as well. So this could be a factor in how you are feeling. You say you are 3 days post op, I am thinking only 3 days post op. Perhaps you just need to give yourself a bit longer and take things one step at a time.

Having said this, I don’t know you, so do talk about this to someone involved in your care  and get some advice from them. The Breast Care nurse might be a good person and you may have a community nurse coming by. Your GP can also help.

I hope you feel a bit better as the week goes on.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
