Possible subungual melanoma awaiting biopsy

7 Jun 2019 16:35

Hi,

I feel a little silly being on this forum just now but I’m a little nervous.

Earlier this week I attended a review appointment at a dermatologist clinic regarding a review of a line on my thumb nail. It has grown and gotten darker since my last appt in December so it was decided that the nail would be removed and a biopsy taken to rule out melanoma.

I was meant to have my review back in Feb but gave birth that day, so was otherwise preoccupied

There doesn’t appear to be much information about what this form of melanoma and what the procedure entails on the internet from reputable sources I couldn’t ask the questions at the time as my 4yo was present.

Any information warmly received.

Thanks

Hi,

Subungal melanoma is one of the rarer types of melanoma so there isn't too much information around I'm afraid. The best website I could find to help explain a little of what the procedure will entail is this American website https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/319100.php

Hopefully the biopsy will show your nail is fine but please let us know how you get on.

Hi,

Thanks for your update. Try and keep yourself busy and distracted - you don't have too long to wait for the surgery thank goodness. While you wait for the results try and arrange some nice summer days out with your family or pamper yourself with a massage etc. I hope the results come back clear - good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie

Just updating this thread.

Had my biopsy yesterday and when consultant lifted the nail she noted pigment change on the nail matrix. She took a biopsy of this too and has sent it to oncology for testing. She did say it doesn’t look malignant (which is great) but she also said she can’t be sure until it’s been tested.

Blooming hurts though!

And now the wait......

Any advice to pass the time

Hi Gryffindormum,

I have mentioned in another post about the lack of control that people feel when awaiting appointments and results. That is why waiting is the hardest part - once you get your results you can take back some control of your life because you know what is happening and you can make decisions from what you are told. So, while waiting, do things you enjoy where you feel in control or do things where control doesn't matter. Personally I like to walk and enjoy fresh air and scenery when I'm feeling anxious. I also listen to a Mindfulness CD or do tai chi. Start a hobby that you can lose yourself in (I found doing my family tree saved my sanity when first diagnosed - I can get lost in the past). I also throw myself into redecorating my house and I joined a choir! I hope the pain settles down quickly and you don't have too long to wait for the results - hopefully bringing good news. x
