Possible lymphoma - lots of unexplained symptoms

Hi, my name is Becky and I’m looking for some advice.

Ive has lots of symptoms over the last few months, including chest pain, shoulder pain, spitting blood, oral thrush, angioectasia in stomach, bowel problems, weight loss, night sweats, ear pain, tinnitus, left sided numbness & tingling in my face, leg and arm and pain in the bones of my shins, especially the left side.

I’ve had the following tests:

CT scan abdomen - clear

Abdominal ultrasound - clear

chest x Ray - clear

endoscopy - thrush found and angioectasia

Mri neck - clear

nasal scope - found bleeding ulcer in nasopharyngeal area but second scope cannot see it anymore.

bloods - clear apart from IG A raised

Now I have woken up with a hard swollen lymph node under my ear (again on the left side) I visited the gp this morning and he said if it’s still there in a week he’d refer me for ultrasound. Im so confused! With all of my other symptoms why wait another week, I’ve been waiting 7 months since this all started and I’m losing my mind with worry.

I have 2 hound kids (5 and 2) and I’m absolutely terrified of me not being there for them. I just want to get to the root of the problem and tackle it head on.

Does anyone have any suggestions what I can do next?? Any tests to specifically ask for? Or has anyone been through a similar experience?

thank you in advance. Sorry for the long post! Xxxxx

  • Hi Young_mum,

Thank you for posting. I can appreciate that it must be worrying for you if you don’t feel that your problems are being addressed properly. Unfortunately, we cannot help you get a diagnosis. Only a doctor can diagnose you. I can understand you're worried, but it's good to know your tests results were clear of cancer. Please try not to panic, but if you are still worried about your symptoms you can discuss it with your GP next week. It might be handy to make a note of all the questions you have, so that you leave the appointment feeling confident that everything was covered.

    I hope this helps,

  • Hi Young_mum.

Has anybody mentioned the possibility of Fibromyalgia?

  • Hi telemando,

No no one has suggested that. Thank you for the suggestion, I’ll have a look online now- would that explain the physical side of things though? Like the lymph node?

  • I am not a doctor.

Lymph nodes come and go. And sometimes they come and don't go!  Swollen lymph nodes are incredibly common, because a lymph node swells up when it's fighting off an infection. Usually it goes down within 4 weeks, but it can naturally take longer, and some nodes stay permanently swollen.

Most doctors don't worry about lymph nodes until they've been swollen for 6 weeks or so, and then when they're scanned they nearly always turn out to be "reactive" (fighting an infection).  Additionally, all lymphomas are pretty uncommon.  So really, it's best not to get too paranoid about lymph nodes. If a node is swollen for more than 6 weeks, tell your doctor who might arrange an ultrasound, but even then it's unlikely to be lymphoma. I suspect that your doctor agreed to scan your raised node after 1 week because he just wants to set your mind at rest over this. I think most other doctors would tell you to come back in a month or so.

Fibromyalgia might explain the pain in your neck and shoulders and other parts of your body. It also comes with a plethora of other symptoms which you can look up.

Your face and ear problems might be caused by sinus congestion/infection. I'm a martyr to this myself. When my sinuses are inflamed I get visual problems, slight facial numbness, toothache, headaches, etc.I regularly inhale steam (using a facial sauna) with herbal decongestant drops to keep my sinuses clear.

These are all things for you to consider and discuss with your GP.  Of course, I could easily be wrong.

  • Hi I'm going through something similar, did you ever get an answer? Thanks x
