I have abdominal pain for the past month, blood in stool, and a positive FIT above 200. 2 week pathway for colonoscopy. Ended up in hospital with the pain, and they did a CT which came back clear. However they still want to do the colonoscopy. Does a Ct not pick up anything untoward? Getting anxious now.
No matter which tests they use prior, colonoscopy is the gold standard because it allows them to actually visualise the colon with their own eyes. It's a huge positive that the CT scan was clear. A colonoscopy also allows them to see if anything else is going on that isn't cancer. Like haemorrhoids, tears etc.
Hello and thank you for your post.
The colonoscopy is the gold standard test to look inside your bowel. While it it is reassuring that the CT scan did not show anything worrying the colonoscopy is the most reliable way to see inside the bowel this is because there is a camera attached to it, so if something needs to be biopsied it can also be done using this scope.
