Options regarding time scale from diagnosis

My mum has just been diagnosed with a rare terminal form of leukaemia. The haematology consultant has said that they feel having invasive treatment is going to make any difference to the outcome. My mum & the family have decided she would like to try & have a quality of life rather than being very ill from chemotherapy etc

My mum doesn’t want to know of an expected timeline on her life - my brother & I would like to so we can start hoping to plan anything’s she would like to do etc

She is of sound mind etc so would they be able to tell my brother & I of any expected time without my mum knowing. Sorry for long post it’s been a very stressful week.

Thanks in advance.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Lynne although I'm sorry to read about your mum's diagnosis.

Your mum's medical team can only discuss the details of how long she may have left if you have your mum's permission, so have a chat with her and see if she'll let you and your brother have this so you can speak to them and get a rough timeline of how long she may have left.

Although you haven't stated the type of leukaemia your mum has I am still able to share a section we have on our website about the different types of leukaemia for you to have a look at. Most of them will have a section the provides survival statistics but do bear in mind that these are general numbers and that every individual is different.

I hope this helps Lynne and that you and your brother are able to find out so you can plan some activities for you all to do and create some lovely memories.

    Kind regards,
