Together we will beat cancer

Nasal cancer query

7 Nov 2019 18:41

I was just looking some answers and came across this page.  I'm going through a difficult situation.  I've been having right side facial pain for over a year which appears to be coming from my nose/sinuses.  The pain and and pressure around my eye is very intense at times.  I get pain and numbness travelling down to my ear, teeth and numbness in my tongue.  Additionally I have awful headaches and neck pain, consistent right sided congestion and have some trouble breathing through my right nostril when trying to sleep.  Inside the right side of my nose looks patchy white and it is much narrower. I know I have a deviated septum which I believed could be causing my symptoms.  My research tells me this is possible as well as other causes such as sinus or nasal cancers which is of course what concerns me.  My symptoms at times are continuous and appear to be getting worse. I was referred for an MRI due to numbness, still waiting for this.  I was also sent to ENT who I saw today.  He took a quick look with the lighted scope and said it looks healthy and the deviated septum definitely wouldn't cause these symptoms!  He has referred me for a CT to check for chronic sinitus but believes it will be clear.  He didn't mention any other possible causes apart from neurological which I'm not convinced about due to congestion, white patches, sinus pressure, and pain.  I'm feeling quite upset as it was a rushed appointment and I felt he was a little dismissive considering how much I'm currently suffering.  I would appreciate anyones thoughts or feedback.  Thank you

Hello and thank you for posting a question. I am sorry to learn that you are waiting to have a scan. I can appreciate that this must be a concerning time.

Waiting for tests investigations and the results can be very stressful and so I think that it is relatively 'normal' to try to work out what might be the matter. But it is not always easy to do this, as symptoms are rarely specific to just one disease. So before you can know more you need to wait until the scan has been done and the results are available. This waiting is very hard.

It is a shame that you felt so rushed during the ENT appointment as I would imagine that you would be feeling a little better if you had more time to ask questions. But my thinking is that there was probably not much that could be said, as I get the impression that the specialist did not see anything that they could comment on. So the scan is important in working out what might be the matter. It is fair to say that some doctors are happy to discuss possible causes before results are available, while others won't, because at best they are making an educated guess. So sometimes a first appointment can be be a little less informative than someone might like. But I do appreciate that this must be disappointing for you as you are still carrying your worries.

I do hope that you get the scan and the the results soon. Hopefully nothing too serious is wrong as nasal and paranasal cancer is very rare.
