Mums Peritoneal Cancer

Hello

Mum went into hospital 3 weeks ago with suspected food poisoning, since then she's been diagnosed with peritoneal cancer and told chemo is the only way forward. She also has a bowel obstruction and vomits whenever she eats. Last week they decided she could undergo surgery for the obstruction and then get fit enough for chemo. The day before the surgery the anaesthetist decided he wouldn't carry out the surgery as mums chances of survival are too low, plus she may end on a ventilator afterwards which is now not allowed to be given to cancer patients and must be saved for covid sufferers. As a result of all this, mum has been deemed not to be fit enough for chemo and has been put on end of life care.

Should I (can I) be fighting for the surgery?

How is it possible that in 3 weeks I can go from having a super fit mum to losing her? If we found money could we pay do go private and how do I do that? I'm so lost and in so much pain. As for my poor mum

please help guide us

  • Hi Elmo007,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm so sorry to read about your mum - it sounds like it's been an incredibly difficult few weeks and I'm sure there must be a lot of emotion and confusion.

Firstly I would make sure you get as much information and any options from your mum's specialist as possible, if you haven't already, and ask any and all questions you have.

If you'd like to talk it through with one of our nurses, who may be better able to advise than myself, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

We are always here for support on the forum if you ever feel you need a safe space to write things down or speak to others.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
