Mammogram Ultrasound Waiting Times

26 May 2023 06:36

Hi

I've got a small lump in my breast and was referred to breast clinic. Consultant doesn't think it cancerous but has asked for an ultrasound and mammogram saying it will be 2/3 weeks. It's been 6 weeks now and haven't heard anything. I phoned the xray department and they have my referral but it's a longer waiting time. Obviously I worry daily and get anxious about the wait and the what ifs.

Has anyone else waited more than the 2/3 week quoted?

Many thanks

Hi SandyBrains and thanks for posting.

It sounds like you are having a worrying time at the moment.

Unfortunately we are hearing from lots of people who say they are waiting longer for their scans.

It might help to know that the majority of referrals do not turn out to be cancer.  But if this were to be the case most cancers grow slowly and waiting a few weeks is unlikely to affect the overall situation.

Some people find it is helpful to keep busy while they are waiting for an appointment.  You may like to look at this website from the NHS Every Mind Matters.  It gives ideas about how to stop those thoughts that go round in our head and can keep us awake at night.

I hope you have your appointment soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Yours sincerely,

Rachel
