Hello and thanks for your post

I was sorry to learn about your family member. This must be a difficult time for the whole family.

The nodules in the lung may be nothing to worry about. If people without health problems were scanned many would be found to have nodules in organs including the lungs and spleen. In most cases these are benign (non-cancer related) cysts and often they will disappear on their own. It can be difficult when people are diagnosed with cancer to distinguish between benign and cancer related (malignant) cysts.

Doctors follow clinical guidance when looking at lung nodules. You can read more about this here. This helps them to decide what types of nodules need to be followed up to see if they change.  This is why your relative is going to have a CT scan. It is often the case of repeating scans and monitoring any changes in the nodules. If  scans continues to show no growth there is a good chance that it is nothing to worry about.  Your relatives specialist will be able to advise on how likely this is.

I hope this helps. If you would like to speak to one of the nurses directly, you can telephone us on 0808 800 4040. We are here from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.

Best wishes,

Celene
