Just received diagnosis

I just received my breast cancer diagnosis on the 12 of September and am freaking out about the surgery or to be really truthful the anesthesia.   I've been using Google to read everything I can get my eyes on.  I am.seeing that regional blocks are used.   I am ok with general anesthesia but am terrified of nerve blocks due to bad experience.  I am having a lumpectomy with sentle node biopsy.   Is what I am reading about regional anesthesia right or do they use general??

    Hi Catmad,

A very warm welcome to the forum that nobody really wants to join.

Google is not your friend at this stage. Don't believe everything that you read, or you'll be climbing the walls. I have had two bouts of breast cancer, a year apart. On both occasons, I had a general anaesthetic. I have problems with anaesthetics and have stopped breathing on the operating table before, so this is always an added worry for me. My team were brilliant and I had no bother at all.

Do talk to your surgeon and tell him how you feel and, I'm sure that s/he will be able to reassure you. Do you know what type and grade of cancer you have, or what treatment is being considered post-surgery?

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. Remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi,

Thank you for responding.   It ie a grade 2 hormone positive,  her2 negative. it is small 11cm.  They plan on doing  lumpectomy with node biopsy then radiation followed by 5 years of hormone Treatment.   I met with the consultant today very reassuring and confident they can treat it and all will be well.  I know I am extremely lucky as it is treatable.   It was truly a shock as no symptoms just picked up on routine mammogram

    Hi Catmad,

No matter what the circumstances, getting a cancer diagnosis always comes as a shock. I am glad to hear that all went well with your consultant today. Did you discuss your fear of regional blocks? I hope that you were reassured about this too. Have you got a date for your lumpectomy yet? It is good to know that it is still small and treatable and that you feel confident in your surgeon.

    Please keep in touch.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

I received my surgery date today, it is the 11th of October. I did discuss my fear of regional blocks and the surgery responded with "i like my patients asleep ' so I think I can handle the surgery. Finding a good fitting bra is my next challenge now  so shopping trip tomorrow.   Any suggestions?

    Hi Catmad,

I'm glad to hear that you now have a date and that you discussed your fears with your consultant. No doubt you feel much more reassured now, knowing that you're going to have a general anaesthetic.

To start with you will probably just want a soft bra, that won't rub on your scar. Primark do some post-surgery bras. Marks and Spencer amd John Lewis, also have some good fitting ones. There are also mail order companies like Nicola Jane & Amoena, who do pocketed bras, but these are usually more expensive. Asda also do some, but I understand that this is now only online.

You are probably as well to wait until after your surgery before buying a good fitting bra, as what you need will depend upon how much tissue they have to remove.

My local authority will also insert pockets into three normal bras each year, which is helpful, as most shops have a limited range.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
