I was diagnosed with T1 vocal cord cancer, localised, no spread, in January this year. Since then I have had 2 minor ops, an exploratory and a laser. To be certain that all the “nasties” were removed I then had 4 weeks of RT. This finished 23rd April and I have had 2 check ups since and appear to be heading in the right direction. Throughout the NHS and staff at the hospital have been exemplary.... thank you. I was dreading the RT with its not being able to eat, burnt skin, sore throat and THE MASK !! The reality was I sailed through, could eat more or less anything with a bit of difficulty swallowing, skin was kept under control with liberal daily applications of cream and I’ve had sorer throats with colds. All the horror stories I’d read on the web were not applicable to me.This is important, don’t go into treatment worried sick, we’re all unique in the way it will affect us, take it easy. The worst I experienced was a nasty, dry, hacking cough which was continuous for a fortnight and kept me from sleeping... this was not good, but a small price to pay for hopefully remission / cure. I am now 4 months past my final RT and still have problems with thick mucous which constantly makes me clear my throat but this will no doubt pass in time. I am under constant surveillance for the next 5 years and am in highly competent hands. I feel I have been lucky and just wanted to pass this positivity on to all of you who are suffering at the present. Best wishes to all, in your darkest hours try and see that dim light at the end of that long tunnel, it’s there if you want it to be.....
