How you feel on Capecetabine for breast cancer

Hello,

I have inflammatory triple negative inoperable breast cancer which has now spread to lungs.

Could anyone tell me how you feel day to day on capecetabine please? I feel well and don't want to ruin what life I have left with side effects, but breast skin is breaking down and am constantly being told how horrific it will be if I don't take chemo. Thank you

  • Hello Jaymac,

l took this for bowel and liver cancer, along with radiotherapy..l was not sick just very tired, but that said l still spent 4-6 hours everyday looking after my herd of cattle and flock of sheep,as well as running a guesthouse, hostel.and subsequently building my retirement home.

Exhaustion figured high on my agenda, but so did recognition of time to rest, before picking up tools once again,a flexible approach to work and rest is the way to go.

We are all different,as will our response to medication, l am especially intolerant to most and allergic to a few,but the only way you will find out is to take the plunge.

It seems to me that if your medical team are strongly advising you to take this action, then their experience is clearly pointing to the advantage to yourself. If your skin is breaking down l can only imagine that any quality of life will disappear with its decline,so reality say's you are looking at a certain downhill descent.

Without knowing your prognosis it is difficult to advise with any certainty, other than to say dose rates can be adjusted and treatment can be ceased by yourself if the effects prove to challenging

l am afraid the answer to this will lie within yourself, and the decision you arrive at will be yours alone and the correct one for you, my best wishes for whichever path you choose to journey upon,

                                                                                                             David

  • Hello Gruntifen,

Thank you so much for your reply to my plea for advice.

You have given me hope and courage to try at least. I dreaded sickness and diarrhoea  as this would seriously  ruin the quality of life I have now.

    Thank you again,

  • Hi Jaymac

I have inflammatory breast cancer which was at stage 4 when diagnosed. I was given up to 2 years to live. I've had lots of problems but miraculously went into remission. My 2 years was up in September!!

I've been on capeciteabine for a year now and by the 2nd week of the cycle (2 weeks on and 1 week off with continuous lapatinib) I do feel tired but I've also got ME so I'm not surprised. Overall though it hasn't knocked me off my feet like docetaxel did. It does allow me to do what I want most of the time. But we're all different so why not give it a try for a couple of cycles and see how you get on. You can always discuss stopping it with your oncologist if you find it's not for you.

Good luck on your cancer journey

    Barb

  • Hi Barbm,

Thank you so much for your positive comments.

This morning I woke feeling I couldn't cope again but your post has lifted me up so much.

I think I must try as I was given one year last March if I refused treatment.

    Thank you again.
