Let's beat cancer sooner

Hi I have recently had a ct scan at my hospital for other

7 Jan 2018 17:00

Tests and it's findings were a 6cm Exophytic kidney cyst on my left kidney. It started of being a simple cyst but the last two years it has grown to 6 cm at present day.

I have swelling on my abdomen where the cyst is on the upper pole. I am getting cosntant stabbing pains and dull ache which is there 24/7. I can not lie on that side anymore in bed.

I saw my gp the other day about the results, he read them out while I was there, all he said about the cyst was, that it is a simple kidney cyst. He didnt even say what size it was I am so angry with him. So will try and get a second opinion this week.

Am I right to chase this up as it is causing symptoms.

At what size do they turn into tumors or names?

Go private get a second opinion, I had a lump in my breast and after my mum dying from Brest cancer I went into shock nhs told me I had to wait 2 weeks for a scan and I knew I wouldn't trust what they said anyway, when you go private they really make sure and won't stop till they have answers I know it's money n I really couldn't afford it but it lifts a weight off your shoulders good or bad you have to take control of your own health x

A cyst!? I'd get a 2nd opinion ASAP or ask for a referral to a nephrologist. Or go to A&E. Keep chasing! Or go private as the pp suggested

Hi Marley16 Thank you for your reply. I will look into going private but am going to get a second opinion too. They don't have to put up with the pain do they? I was quite annoyed with my gp when he didnt show any interest also not saying the name or size of the cyst, I think he has had enough of me, well I have had enough of him now too. I am so sorry you lost your lovely mum to cancer, I lost a couple of my aunties and my lovely father too. If one thing doesn't get us, Cancer will Sad I hope you are on the road to recovery now, good luck go to you xxx

Hi RP

Thanks for your quick reply. I am going to see if I can get a double appointment with one of my lady gp's this week. If I can't it will mean a trip to A&E.

Think the gp's have a new system in force 'Watch & Wait, and dont show the patients that you care'

What is our world coming too Sad

Unfortunately it is a case of who shouts the loudest gets heard. My cancer was picked up in a scan four months before anything happened or I was told. This was despite me regularly phoning the consultants secretary and asking what was happening, and two trips to A&E.

Hi Rp

Many thanks for your help. I have managed to get a double appointment with my favourite lady GP. So will get her to look at the results and see what she thinks.

I have had two runs to A&E just before Christmas, with excruciating abdominal pain, twice discharged as they think it's just a blockage, so sent home with laxatives which aren't working anyway.

So I shall keep on until something gives way, and hopefully not a 3rd time in A&E

Many thanks for your help

Hello Christie

Thanks for posting a question. I am sorry to learn about your kidney cyst and the discomfort that you are experiencing.

As you are uncomfortable, I think that it is very reasonable for you to go back and discuss the situation with your GP. But I am not sure that you necessarily need a second opinion  You might find that your doctor can answers your questions, if you are able to talk with them again. But if at the end of the day after seeing your doctor again, if you are still unhappy with the information you have received, then do ask to see someone else.

It may be reassuring to know that kidney cysts are actually very common. Some studies suggest that up to about half of all people over the age of 50 may have one.  Your scan will have been looked at by a specialist doctor who is an expert at reading scans. They will have reported to your doctor what the scan was showing. So your GP will have been giving you information based on what the specialist thought.

There is a well-established international system for classifying kidney cysts which grades them from 1 to 4. Size is not particularly important in this grading system. The guidelines say that category 1 and 2 cysts are very unlikely to contain cancerous cells or become cancerous. If your cyst is round or oval, with thin even walls and no solid material it is likely to be a category1 simple cyst and not cancerous. So do ask your doctor about how your cyst was graded and they may be able to reassure you.

I hope that this helps a little. Do get back to us if you have any other questions. If you would like to telephone our freephone number is 0808 8004040. We are between the hours of 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

All the best,

Jean

Hi Jean

Many thanks for your reply. I know cysts are very common, also know some people that have them too. I have lots of medical issues mainly down to having 22q deletion as in DiGeorge Syndrome. Every thing has a label, so I'm guessing that one is mine lol.

My GP does always do his best, I find it hard sometimes as he is rather nice looking and that sometimes gets in my way, as in getting my words out lol. Poor man he doesn't know, although he may have an idea lol.

I need to discuss other issue with a lady gp because of that very reason.

I will post on here when I have been to see her and see what she thinks xxxx
