HER2 breast cancer with a large area of calcification

Hello everyone,I was diagnosed with HER2 positive invasive ductal breast cancer in October. My lump was about 4.5cms and literally came from nowhere. I also have at least one node affected. I am 45 years old. I have completed 5 rounds of TCHP which have been pretty grim and I cannot wait until it's over. I'd like to get some advice from you all with regards to my surgery. My surgeon is suggesting a lumpectomy and says that the risk of recurrence is the same whether you have a lumpectomy or a mastectomy. Now, it's not that I don't believe him but if I have no milk ducts it's literally impossible to get the same cancer again in the left breast. Anyway, back to my point. I've had another mammogram as they've told me I also have a large area of calcification in the same breast which they found on my first mammogram and didn't tell me about for some reason - it's still there so I've had a biopsy which showed the sample to be benign but because it's a large area they want to do another biopsy to be as sure as possible and if this one is also benign they assume all of it is. I'm not happy about assuming bearing in mind I already have cancer at 45 and it's more common in your 50's - so I think I'd rather have a mastectomy/double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. I'd like to do the other breast later down the line as I plan to have a baby with frozen eggs as I've had many failed rounds of IVF and I'd like the option to at least try and breastfeed if I'm lucky enough to even have a baby. Any advice on lumpectomy/mastectomy or anything else I've mentioned would be gratefully received. My friend was diagnosed two weeks after me with the same cancer but very small and HER2 negative - shes had a lumpectomy and isn't happy with the dent in her breast. Thanks all.

  • Hi....regarding your friend..  I had a lumpectomy that left a very noticeable dent and when I mentioned that it bothered me to my doctor she referred me for reconstruction which has massively improved the look of the affected breast. Xx
