Hard neck lump and head swelling

21 Oct 2019 21:34

Hi there,

I have crohn's disease and am immunocompromised by medication to treat it.

Recently I noticed a lump on my neck. It's hard and wont move. It has been there for a month ish...the last few days I think it is getting slightly bigger and ive noticed some swelling (I've circled both locations on the attached picture)

The lump is painless but I occasionally feel a slight ache in my shoulder (may be unrelated)

My doc referred me to ENT rapid clinic and the ENT referred for an ultrasound. He said probably lipoma but my lump is hard and wont move, whereas I've read that lipoma are easily moved.

At the ultrasound what will happen, will it show if its anything sinister that day? Will they know straight away. I'm worrying myself silly about it.

Hello and thanks for posting on the forum,

Lumps cause a lot of anxiety, but in fact the majority do turn out to be harmless.

It's not possible to say what the lump may be and it's good that you are going for an ultrasound to get it checked out.

The ultrasound will be able to in some cases pick up cysts and fatty lumps, although if it's not very clear as to what it is, a biopsy may be done either at the time, or an appointment made for this to be done later.

Depending on the clinic and every hospital has it's own policy, you may not get the results on the day, but you may be given an appointment for the results at a later date.

As you can see, it's not black and white, so do ask questions on the day.

I hope you get to know soon

All the best

Wanda
