Grandfather diagnosed with Mesothelioma

16 Aug 2019 01:42

Hi all,

My grandfather was diagnosed with Mesothelioma a few weeks back. He was discharged from hospital with no care package. He was at home for 3 days and is now back in hospital. I feel completely bewildered at how the hospital has handled everything. He is 88 and I'm not sure what to expect in terms of his symptoms and what care to give him when he returns home in a few days. We've been told he may have weeks of months.

Can anyone help ?

Hi there. My dad died from mesothelioma 10 weeks ago. You should have been assigned to the hospice team if he has months or weeks. Ask the consultant he is under to do this. They are fabulous and take care of each step along the way. He mustn't be discharged without a liaison person you can ring.

Once found, this disease is very well established and usually untreatable. It's a quick decline usually once found I'm afraid. (I'll send you link to my blog if you think it would help. It describes in detail his symptoms and what to expect, but it's sad and tough to read)

As it is industrial illness , your gp should refer the forms to the government, as he will get a lump sum of around£ 13,000(more if he was younger). It is his right to get that. There is money put aside specially for this illness by the government) There is also weekly benefit paid to him whilst he is still alive because of nature  of this this disease. Its about £165 weekly. Solicitors act on your behalf too for mesothelioma as its industrial, to investigate if the company he worked for approx 40 - 50 yrs ago is liable, since it takes this long to develop. He just has to provide a work history and they do the rest.

I hope I've helped a little.

Hello Mandy,

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I'm so sorry for your loss and I am wishing you and your family well.

We haven't been assigned to a hospice team.

The consultant that diagnosed him is nowhere to be found.

Is the liaison person from palliative care ? We haven't been assigned anyone.

We have been informed that a district nurse will come out and to do everything through our GP. The doctor from the Hospital sent us home with pain relief which they suspect he will need in due course.

They've also said they have fast tracked him because he is deteriorating quickly (whatever that means).

Please i would like to read your blog if you would send me the link.

If I have anymore questions is it I'm to contact you through the blog again?

I'm sending you love and best wishes.

Hello Chanel,

I would ring the palliative care team yourself, based at your hospital. Ask for their advice and tell them of your concern. Things will move quickly now, so you need support early. Your GP will remain pivotal in the process so don't hesitate going through them.

Equipment too will be set up in his home.. Hospital bed, raised toilet seat, rails etc.... District nurses arrange it all. I'm afraid these things will be needed.

I'll send you my link. It may help.

I'm here if you need any advice.

Wishing you and your family love and prayers xxx

Ps, fast tracked means usually seen within 2 weeks by specialist team and biopsy of lung performed if not had one already. Xx
