Going Private for diagnosis, is it easy to go back to NHS?

Hi, lump in my breast (possible re-occurance of my breast cancer) and Have had 2 collapses which they think may be heart related.  Still waiting for referral by GP for the heart and could not even get in to see the GP for the breast scare.  So paid for private consultation at the local private hospital.  My cancer one is on Monday 29th, but the heart one is tomorrow.

We dont have much savings, but just felt it was important, my husband is disabled and relies on me for all things.

Has anyone done something similar and if so, can you be put back on to the NHS and if so how is that done and who does it as I dont think we will be able to afford treatments

Can anyone help me on this

Sheila

  • Hi there, yes your consultant will treat you as a private patient at the consultation but then you will go back onto the NHS, basically people just want an earlier assessment so pay privately.  If you're concerned about this just ask him, he will explain what will happen.  I took this route when I had young children as I felt I wasn't getting anywhere on the NHS route.  Good luck, keep us updated.

  • Hello . Yes my husband went for a private ENT consul after being told 3 times he had acute laringitis by his GP. He had the consultation & the biopsy privately . Once cancer was found he was put straight into the NHS via the private consultant. Fingers crossed for you . Ginny x

  • thanks for that, I will see what the heart consultant wants to do and know I can ask to be put back if to expensive for me

    Will keep you updated

  • Thanks Ginny, for your reply.  I have my cancer check on monday and if it does turn out to be so, then I would like if possible to have the operation on the private, but then back to NHS for the treatment.  Feel better that I can do this.  Keep them fingers crossed

  • This guidance might help - www.nhs.uk/.../

A lot of NHS Cancer Centres now have private clinics attached, it would be worth checking out your local centre for details. Just Google the hospital name and add private cancer clinic to the search.

    Good luck

  • Hi there, I'm aware this post is from 2019, but I'm trying to understand exactly the same - my mom has breast cancer and she is going via the NHS route for everything including chemo, but she wants to have her breast surgery privately. Is this possible, i.e. can she not have the surgery at NHS but at the private doctor and all the rest at NHS? Thanks.

  • Hello,

I hope your mother gets better. Did you find any information on this, would it be possible to get the rest of the treatment via the NHS if part of it is done privately? I've been looking for my mum too but haven't found anything.

    Many thanks.

  • Yes, it is possible. For example, you can get the chemo and surgery in private, but then move to NHS to continue with radiotherapy and get your antibody treatment. As long as treatment parts are separate to each other in terms of time, this is possible. This assumes you qualify for NHS treatment. Some doctors are not helpful and they want you to either choose nhs or private - this is wrong, as if you are qualified for nhs, you can. You need to speak to your doctor and mention that you are planning to switch to nhs for, let's say, radiotherapy part of the treatment to give him / her a heads-up, and they will tell you how. Usually GP will need to refer you again to get back to NHS, but you can stay in the same hospital where you started your private care. If unclear, feel free to let me know.

  • Hi I wonder if someone can help with some advice. I was recently knocked over and had to have a CT scan, When i had it it discovered 2 noduels 1 on each lung.  I had to wait 3mths to see if they were growing.. The 2nd CT scan showed that they were and I have been referred to a Thoracic Specialist.  However due to Covid the NHS queue is a lengthy one so thinking of seeing a specialist privately and if cancerous then being put back on the NHS with a clearer picture.

Normally I would have waited and took my turn.  However i am emotionally  and fiancially reponsible for my Austistic grandson.

So is it possible to do this see the specialist get the diagnosis and then follow on with NHS if the news isnt good.

    Thanks

Hope you are all doing okay

  • Hello Nick 84,

I am in the same situation. Let me know if you find out.

    Thanks
