Going Private for diagnosis, is it easy to go back to NHS?

24 Apr 2019 18:55

Hi, lump in my breast (possible re-occurance of my breast cancer) and Have had 2 collapses which they think may be heart related.  Still waiting for referral by GP for the heart and could not even get in to see the GP for the breast scare.  So paid for private consultation at the local private hospital.  My cancer one is on Monday 29th, but the heart one is tomorrow.

We dont have much savings, but just felt it was important, my husband is disabled and relies on me for all things.

Has anyone done something similar and if so, can you be put back on to the NHS and if so how is that done and who does it as I dont think we will be able to afford treatments

Can anyone help me on this

Sheila

Hi there, yes your consultant will treat you as a private patient at the consultation but then you will go back onto the NHS, basically people just want an earlier assessment so pay privately.  If you're concerned about this just ask him, he will explain what will happen.  I took this route when I had young children as I felt I wasn't getting anywhere on the NHS route.  Good luck, keep us updated.

Hello . Yes my husband went for a private ENT consul after being told 3 times he had acute laringitis by his GP. He had the consultation & the biopsy privately . Once cancer was found he was put straight into the NHS via the private consultant. Fingers crossed for you . Ginny x

Thanks Ginny, for your reply.  I have my cancer check on monday and if it does turn out to be so, then I would like if possible to have the operation on the private, but then back to NHS for the treatment.  Feel better that I can do this.  Keep them fingers crossed

This guidance might help - https://www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/nhs-services-and-treatments/i...

A lot of NHS Cancer Centres now have private clinics attached, it would be worth checking out your local centre for details. Just Google the hospital name and add private cancer clinic to the search.

Good luck
