Four months of vaginal bleeding, now some rectal bleeding

Hi,

i have been bleeding continuously now since July and have iron Deficiency Anemia which is being treated with 3 iron tablets a day. I have had two ultrasounds which cane up with nothing “sinister” but noted thickness of 16mm with “no discrete focal abnormality”, however the bleeding alternates from light to very heavy. I saw a consultant two weeks ago and was finally referred for a hysteroscopy and biopsy but have not had the appointment yet. I also had the Mirena IUD fitted 5 weeks ago as the doctors kept telling me it was hormonal but that hasn’t made any difference. I have had an episode of golf ball blood clots since the Mirena as well as over the months before.

I am very scared now as I have suspected for a few months that I may have rectal bleeding along with the vaginal bleeding but have previously dismissed it as pooling from the front. I had confirmation two days ago that it was rectal when I had a gush in the back passage and this was confirmed visibly by blood when wiping and around the rectum. It was also clear by the pool of blood at the back of my underwear. My doctor told me to come back on Monday if I get another episode and she will refer me for a colonoscopy urgently. Tonight I have seen that it could be a sign advanced cervical cancer when accompanied with my other symptoms and I am very scared. Everything is taking so long to get diagnosed. The Gynaecologist couldn’t see the cervix on examination due to the amount of blood present. I am sorry if it is tmi, but I am very worried. I hope it is ok to post again on here.

  • Hello madonna and welcome.  I read your post earlier and hoped that someone more knowledgeable than myself would be able to answer you.  But I could not leave you any longer as it is apparent how distressed you are and not surprisingly.  Leave google alone (if that is what you have been doing) - it has no sensible part to play in individual diagnoses.  At the moment you don't know the cause of your bleedings and you won't know until the doctor has worked it out.    Go back to your doctor on Monday - I know it will be a long weekend for you.   If your symptoms become worse over the weekend do ring 111 for advice.   Do you have family and/or friends with whom you can chat about your worries?  In any event yes of course it is fine for you to come back here to talk about your fears; that is the purpose of the forum.  Do keep in touch.  Annie

  • Hello Annie,

Thank you so much for your kindness. My husband tells me to shut up about it and has been very unsympathetic. My friends have their own lives and don’t really know what to say to me, I feel very alone.

I had another rectal bleed this morning, it is so scary when accompanied with the long term vaginal bleeding. I will try and rationalise it and hope the doctor can get things moving on Monday. Thank you again for your response.

  • Hi,

Very sorry to read your post, I understand that must be extremely scary....I would agree with Annieliz, call 111 for advice and definitely go back to the Dr Monday, not sure about your Dr's surgery but in my area, you can get in for an emergency appointment. I am speaking out of turn here but nobody should tell you you to shut up, that's not helpful or kind.

I note your Dr is female, if that was me, I would be asking her what she would be doing if it was her in your situation....but that's me, you have to do or say what you feel is right.

I really hope everything works out well for you and the medical professionals will be able to find a resolution.

  • Hi,

Thank you for your lovely reply. I have tried 111 before and have ended up with them just referring me back for an urgent GP appointment. They have told me that they cannot do tests at the weekend. I went to an A and E with the golf ball clots about two months back. I was told that all they could do was see if my iron Deficiency Anemia required an immediate infusion ( it didn’t as I have 600mg a day of iron prescribed) and it would be on my notes they recommended I had a hysteroscopy. The GP I saw after that laughed and said I just had a hormone imbalance and told me to have the Mirena IUD. I felt obliged to have it done so I did but things have only got worse. Another GP referred me to a consultant five weeks after the Mirena was fitted due to the bleeding and I am now still waiting for a hysteroscopy appointment.

i am going back on Monday to confirm to the GP that the bleeding is now rectal as well. I just hope I get seen quickly when she refers me.

i am sorry to go on, Thank you again for your kindness. I will definitely ask the lady doctor what she would do, that is a good idea, thank you.

  • Do let us know how your appointment goes.  Of course you don't have to tell us but we would like to know how you are being treated and how you are feeling.  Annie

  • Thank you, I will. I really appreciate the support. x

  • Hi M

Your GP laughed at you? I would recommend you change GP's and explain exact;ly why. It must be stressful for you but please dont worry, sometimes we all fear the worst and heres hoping your appointment goes well for you

  • Hi,

Yes he said it was probably an over zealous A and E doctor, who knew nothing about it. It was actually a doctor  who had been sent from the Gynaecology department who said I needed the hysteroscopy. Thank you for your good wishes, I am just hoping I am being very silly and there is a rational explanation for both kinds of bleeding. I am so glad I posted, everyone has made me feel a bit better and less alone.

  • I found when i had health issues that the uncertainty was making me feel stressed and when I was finally given the all clear I realised that the stress was making me worse. I know its not easy - but you did the right thing by reaching out as it can be a lonely and scary time but you will be fine :)

  • Thank you. I have had another rectal bleed this morning, so I am very worried. I just hope they can arrange something quickly so I know what’s going on. You have all been very kind to me on here.
