enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

31 Mar 2019 00:49 in response to charrrhx

Hi Charlotte,

If you've been following the tales on this site for a while, you will know that we strongly recommend that you do not consult 'Dr Google'. Much of his information is out of date, poorly researched or hones in on spectacular cases. It leaves us all thinking that we are facing the worst case scenarios. Fortunately, this is seldom the case.

I am glad to hear that your ultrasound showed that your lymph nodes were fine. Have you had a cold or any infection recently? This is all it takes for your lymph nodes to swell.  I am not a doctor and do not know a lot about thyroid cancer, as I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer, but I would have expected your ultrasound to show if there had been any spread.

You are way ahead of yourself thinking of it mutating to drugs and causing anaplastic thyroid cancer. I hope that your biopsy goes well on Monday. It will probably take a couple of weeks after that before you get your results. This is a scary time, but we all get through it. I hope that there is a simpler explanation for your lump.

What ages are your children? You will obviously be worried about them, but I'm sure that you will come through this a stronger person.

Please let us know how you get on and remember that we are always here for you.

Kind regards,

Jolamine xx

Hi Rach,

Telemando has given you some good advice and I hope that this has helped to set your mind to rest. I am not a doctor either, but there are so many simple reasons for taking bloods that there is nothing to worry about. Your nodes can react to any minor infection and this may be all that is happening at the moment.

They can gradually subside again or they may sometimes remain swollen, but this doesn't always mean that they are cancerous. Most of us jump to the worst case scenario whe faced with something that could be cancerous. Fortunately, this seldom turns out to be the case.

Mention the lump in your armpit when you see your GP again on Monday, as you might as well kill two birds with the one stone and, get them both investigated at the same time.

I hope that all turns out well for you and that there is a simple explanation for your swellings.

Do please let us know how you get on and, remember that we are always here for you.

Kind regards,

i’ve been reading this for days. I’ve had a lump in my left side of neck since may 2018 its golf ball size niw. Had mri which showed it ct on chest which was clear fine needle biopsy was inconclusive so was sent for a core biopsy. Results next wednesday 10th april. Worried sick as doc said it could be a red herron but could be lymphoma and looking at lump this is serious. But trying to stay positive with a 10yr and 4yr old. Been signed off till results next week. Reafing all your comments though does settle my thoughts a little. I keep looking on here and nhs website.

Sorry you are going through this too, hope it is just a red Herron for you and nothing serious.

I feel your pain, I have two children (6 and 1) and the one year old is completely realiant on me and still breastfed to sleep, he won’t let his dad near him at bed time! I’m so sad this may stop our journey and it will upset him and me so much having to forcefully stop feeding before any treatment.

i had a biopsy yesterday on my 2cm thyroid module yesterday (classed as u4 up to now), results next Monday.

will keep you in my thoughts please give us an update I’d you are able to xx

Hi everyone,

I was just beginning to feel some relief regarding my collar bone swelling when I got a call from the Dr's saying my GP has received the detailed results of the scan and would like to see me. The appt is not until April 30th so I assume it isn't urgent but the practice is very busy. I've never been asked to go in before as "normal" test results have always been given over the phone. The swelling is still there and although it doesn't cause pain in itself I am still suffering daily neck pain on the right side (the same side as the swelling) and also increasing occurrences of voice hoarseness (no pain) and some intermittent pain in my right ear. Is this likely to be related? I am only 35 but between these worries and some new gastric issues I've been experiencing I feel more like 50!

For the people with children I really relate to that, my worries over my own health the first concern is always how a serious diagnosis would affect my 4 children. I have 3 girls who are 15, 13 and 12 and a little boy who is 4.

Best of luck to everyone still awaiting results x

Hi Nicci,

A very warm welcome to our community.

I see that you are at the stressful time of waiting on biopsy results. We all find this one of the worst times of our cancer journeys.

It is particularly worrying when you have a young family and it is difficult to stay positive. I am glad to see that your research is being restricted to reputable sites. Stay away from 'Dr Google' if you can.

I do hope that your results are not as dire as you seem to be expecting and, that you can go ahead with planning your August wedding without having the shadow of cancer hanging over you.

Do please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Kind regards,

Jolamine xx

Hi Charrrhx,

I'm glad to see that you have had your biopsy now and are waiting for the results. I hope that all goes well for you next Monday and that treatment will be straightforward too.

I breastfed both of my children and feel for you if you have to give up to have treatment. Still, all things considered,  it's a small price to pay if it means that you will be able to remain with the family for so much longer.

Don't forget to keep us updated with your results.

Kind regards,

Hi Littleoldme,

If your appointment with your GP is not until 30th April, I too would assume that it is nothing urgent.  I am not a doctor, but would possibly expect it to be something ike an arthritic nodule. Without medical knowledge, I cannot answer your question about any relationship between your other symptoms.

I totally agree that having a young family to worry about always magnifies worries like this, but I hope that it is good news on 30th.

Don't forget to keep us updated. We are always here for you.

Hi all.

Sorry to butt in, but I have been reading this thread and it seems extremely supportive/reassuring.

I am a 25 year old female, and have been suffering with problems lately in terms of abdo pain and irregular bowel movements (constipation mostly). I also have groin pain that hasn’t went away, despite receiving lots of meds for the bowel issues.

Abour a year ago I noticed a small swelling on my neck, it wasn’t painful or tender so I have been blissfully ignoring it. In the shower last week I then felt that it has grown. It used to be a small bump and it’s now quite significant. You can see it when I swallow (it looks like a bulge on the R side of my neck) I went to the doctor about it and she said nothing reassuring (which I always hope for) and requested an ultrasound. She said I should be seen in 2 weeks, but I heard nothing from the hospital so I called my doctor and it’s been put down as a “non-urgent” referral. It initially reassured me, but the dr advising me I needed to be seen as she “couldn’t figure out what the mass/swelling could be caused by” has sent me in to a panic. I would rather hear one way or another what the doctor was suspecting and I left feeling more confused.

i am needing to sleep sitting up over the last few weeks as I am now feeling extremely breathless when lying down, pain under right rib (feels like lung pain?) and the bottom of my head at the back is constantly achey.

I can barely make it through work without napping - but that may be because of the disturbed sleeps I’m having at night.

Feeling pretty miserable and scared. I don’t want to confide in my family as I know I’m probably worrying over nothing, but the fear of the unknown and the waiting is just awful.

Thanks for reading - any reassurance is much welcomed!! Haha Happy x

Hi Scotland,

A very warm welcome to our community.

Can you find out from your GP who or what department she referred you to? You could then phone the department or consultant's secretary and ask where you are on the waiting list.

If there is still a long wait, It might also be worth seeing your GP again and telling her about the breathlessness, the need to sleep sitting up, your achey head, pain under your rib and tiredness and asking for a more urgent referral.

Try not to worry, as there are a number of possible causes these symptoms other than cancer.

I do hope that you get seen soon and find an answer for your problems.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Kind regards,

Jolamine xx

Than you very much for replying.

I briefly mentioned the breathlessness to her, but didn’t want to sound like a hypochondriac! I called the hospital and they said the waiting list is months long at the moment but they’ve put my name down for cancellations and to be seen at a wider range of hospitals to try and speed things up! I tried to call my GP today due to the other symptoms and I have an appointment with her next Friday so I’m trying to just keep calm until then, but I just say I can’t focus on anything. I know it is probably absolutely nothing but the mind can’t help but wander...

I also just received a letter through from my repeat smear test saying that I’ve had another abnormal result - I’ve been going every 6 months for 2 years with abnormalities.

Cant help but worry my body is trying telling me something isn’t right!! The only thing I’m hoping is that my neck swelling is getting increasingly painful and everything I read says if it’s “sinister” it’s usually painless!

Sorry for the word vomit I’m just increasingly anxious! Xx

Hi Scotland,

Waiting for an appointment and then waiting for the results of any tests is one of the most worrying parts of our cancer journeys. Nobody knows your body better than you, so don't be afraid to push your case if need be. Sadly, many of us have had to do this.

You are right, a 'sinister' lesion is usually, but not always, painless. Once you notice something wrong, you start to imagine the worst. Fortunately, this seldom turns out to be the case.

The lymph nodes ocan swell up due to inflammation elsewhere in the body, so here's hoping that this is all that is wrong. I am sorry to hear about your abnormal smear tests - this must be quite worrying. Do you have to go back for further testing, or is it just a case of returning in 6 months?

Just listen to your body and act accordingly. You are young to have these problems and, need to get them addressed as soon as you can to allow you to get on with the rest of your life.

Please let us know how you get on with your GP and when you get your clinic appointment. We are always here for you.

Kind regards,

Jolamine xx

Yes, it is awful! You wish you could click your fingers and know the answer. I feel guilty pushing for something incase it turns out to be nothing and I’ve wasted time and resources. I have went to a different GP as the man I was seeing wouldn’t even check my neck after the bowel symptoms - he said I was depressed, prescribed me antidepressants and sent me on my way. I do suffer from depression but I am extremely aware of my mental health and found that very disheartening.

I always just took the smear tests with a pinch of salt, yes they are abnormal but if further investigation was needed I was happy that the doctor would pick this up. However, in light of my recent problems I had thought that so many recurrent abnormal smears would have warranted further investigation? I am going to discuss this next Friday also!

I think I may be overanalysing as it’s all hitting me at once.

Thank you Jolamine, I will keep you all informed. You don’t know how much I appreciate your response, it’s really helped me with my anxieties! Xx

Hi Scotland,

I am glad to hear that you have made your appointment to see another GP in the practice, when the other GP was so dismissive. Don't worry about wasting doctor's time. If, heaven forbid, it does turn out to be cancer, the sooner you attend to it the better your chances will be.

It might be worth pointing out to the doctor you see your concerns about your abnormal smears over the past 2 years. You could ask if he feels that this warrants further investigation. I suspect that you would already have had a referral if your clinic thought that there was anything to worry about.

Can I suggest that you draw up a list of all your symptoms and roughly when they all started and give this to the doctor when you see him? Without this, it is all too easy to forget important points until after your consultation.

I have my fingers crossed that this doctor will pay you more attention and, actually listen to your complaints.

Kind regards,

Jolamine xx
