Dull ache in right testicle - worried & anxious

30 Aug 2018 20:41

Hey, so I went to the urologist about a prexisting condition in my testicle called a varicocele (which is swollen veins and completely benign, but I wanted treatment for it). Anyway he did the examination and suggested a scan if I wanted the treatment.

A day or two later I started to notice a sort of dull ache in my OTHER testicle which I hadn’t experienced before. It was intermittent and not particularly painful as such but started to worry me. Anyway I immediately self examined myself to feel for anything unusual and couldn’t feel anything (no lumps, felt the same size, not particularly hard, no changes I could feel).

Looking online at various symptom checkers I noticed that testicular cancer was on there and I had the following common symptoms; pain/discomfort in the testicle, pain/discomfort in the abdomen, and a touch of fatigue. However no lump or indication of any sort of tumour. This has put me in a real state of  limbo and got me really low.

I had the examination about 5 days ago now and he obviously didn’t feel anything sinister otherwise I would have been straight in for a scan. But I have seen a couple of stories of cancer symptoms starting even with no indication of a tumour?

My scan is in a week. And while I can certainly handle the discomfort if it continues I don’t know if I can handle the worry and anxiety surrounding it.

If anyone could give me some words of reassurance that would be fantastic.

Hello and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you are worried about symptoms. To reassure you, testicular lumps, aches and pains, are very common. GPs and urologists see lots of troublesome, but not serious, testicular and genital area problems, in their everyday practice.

To place this in context, testicular cancer itself is not common. Also, you have recently seen a urologist who has examined you, so I do not think that you need to be unduly worried.

Googling symptoms to read, does not replace a sound medical assessment by a doctor, and rarely provides a clear answer, and usually results in increasing anxiety. It is also tempting to lump various different symptoms together when we are anxious. These are not that likely to be related, and are probably due to different things. So try not to over worry, and also try to keep yourself busy and occupied until your scan. If you find your anxiety is hard to cope with, then do seek advice from your GP.

I hope that you are able to get your health concern sorted out soon.

Best wishes,

Vanda

Thanks for this reply, helped me out so much.

I went for an ultrasound and they said everything looks fine and I saw the uruologist after who reiterated there is definitely no evidence of cancer. I asked what the ache was down to and he said it could be down to anything aches happen for all kinds of reasons.

It’s now been nearly 5 days since the scan and the ache is still the same. Still no lumps but the testicle definitely feels a bit firmer. As far as I can feel anyway.

Not sure what’s best to do. Is it injured or damaged? Is there an infection? Obviously I trust the judgement of the radiologist and urologist. But can cancer sometimes be undectable on ultrasound?

Starting to irritate me as I’m moving away to university in a few days and just want rid of whatever it is that’s buggering me! Should I go back to the GP?

Hello and thanks for posting on this thread.

I am sorry to learn you have a lump that you are concerned about. Testicle lumps or bumps are common and most aren't caused  by anything serious. You can read more about this here. However it is always best to get them checked out by your GP to be on the safe side. I understand it can be embarrassing going to see a doctor about intimate matters but they are very used to examining people, and will try to put you at ease. If they think necessary they will be able to arrange more tests.

All the best.

Naomi

Ok, so I’m waiting for a scan (no date yet) they’ll send me a latter with a date.

I’ve had 2 urine samples checked all appears to be fine, no lumps. Had a blood test but still need to do another blood test as some things don’t appear straight away.

Have you been to doctors yet?

thanks for replying! Went to the doctors and they done some checks and all seemed fine, no lumps etc and had an initial urine test come back as all clear! I was just told to stick to pain killers and come back if it persists! Went back today and been given antibiotics as they think it might be epididymitis, I’m not convinced honestly as there doesn’t seem to be any swelling on the epidermis’ themselves.

Im on these antibiotics for two weeks and to go back again if no changes...

have they mentioned the possibility of epididymitis to you?

No mention of any specific illnesses, GPs plan was to let me wait a few weeks to see how it goes but I told him it’s already been a few weeks and I really need to find out what’s wrong with me, then he referred me for a scan.

So now just waiting for a letter to see when I can go in for a scan.

Hi. I also have similar issue.

Had severe pain in right testicle one evening. Thought it went away the next morning but by afternoon it was back but not as severe. Dialled 111 to explain situation & was told to see GP ASAP. GP put me on painkillers & antibiotics & gave me number to book an ultrasound appointment (though I was only allowed to call to book this after 3 working days. Anything sooner would have to be on private health care - not NHS).

Had the ultrasound yesterday & they could find no issues. Apparently a healthy pair of balls which is great news, but Im worried about the amount of pain I’m still in, even with the painkillers. I am booked in to see GP in 2 days to review results & discuss next actions. I hope I am given stronger painkillers. I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy.

Hello Bensam and thank you for posting a question. I am sorry to learn about the testicular pain, but I am pleased that the ultrasound did not show anything worrying. When this type of pain comes on suddenly, it is not usually related to cancer and often it will be to do with infection. Antibiotics do not work right away so this is probably why you still have pain. Hopefully the antibiotics will start to work soon and the pain will get better. Do get back to us if you have any other questions. If you want to telephone the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday. Kind regards, Jean

Thank you for your reply. Today is the last day of my antibiotics & I have noticed a reduction in pain. Not sure if I need any more. Will discuss with GP tomorrow morning
