Dark mole turned light brown/reddish

Hey,

Im M 26 and have a mole under my left nipple that Iv had for as long as i can remember. It's always been the odd one out as It’s darker than the rest of them. The mole is 5mm and round. I cant remember when I noticed but its gone lighter towards the edge like a light brown/reddish but still looks darkish in the middle. I only notice that mole when I shave which is around once a month and it kept on catching my eye that the colour has changed. It doesn’t hurt, itch or bleed and the only thing from the ABCDE thats changed is the C. A few strands of hair is also growing out of it

It kept playing on my mind so I booked a GP phone appointment. After 3 weeks, 3 different appointments and all 3 either getting cancelled or the doctor never ringing me I thought i'll just leave it until covid is over. A few days later I moved to a new GP but it just kept playing on my mind to have it checked so I rang up today, got an appointment , sent pictures and got a call back a few hours later. Spoke to a doctor about the mole and he went over the pictures and said it looks like the colour does look lighter towards the edge ect. He said he’s not going to refer me to a dermatologist and instead he’s going to have his colleague call me on Wednesday who’s more specialised in this area and potentiality come in for a face to face appointment and get it checked under a scope.

Im now playing all the bad outcomes/situations through my mind and having social anxiety isn’t helping one bit. I keep thinking iv left it too late as I literally can not remember when I noticed it changing colour but I feel like its been like that for a while now. Anyone had any similar experience with a mole changing colour and any tips on how to keep my mind calm untill my next appointment? thank you

  • I have just come on to ask the same question. Exactly the same as you. Underneath my breast and have seen the colour has got a little lighter. Also has some hair coming out. I have contacted the doctor too just waiting for them to call.

I hope the doctor gets in contact with you

  • Worst thing I did was look at google and keep searching and comparing imagines ect. Read a few dermatology articles though that hair still growing is unlikely to transform into melanoma, but it is theoretically possible it said. Ill come back to this post on Wednesday and make an update incase anyone else is going through the same worry

  • I had two moles appear which were brown an changed colour one grew to 5mm rapidly and changed with lighter borders , I had it removed last year and the result was all clear, they left the other one there which grew to 6mm , jan20-jan21 after my gp visit last month I had an appointment within 2 weeks at dermatology  and had to have it removed that day ,with a follow up appointment four weeks away, I'm waiting on the result of that one which I have an appointment for next Tuesday , but I'm hopefull that's all clear too like last time . Hope this gave you some positive energy the wait is awful, Il let you know what they say

  • Hi mildblue, katieb and Lu,

I'm sorry you are all going through the worry of having a mole checked out. I just want to try and give you some information to balance that given on Google (which is out of date and only gives the worse case scenarios).

Firstly, if you are all young, like mildblue, there is a very good chance your moles will be fine. It's not unusual for existing moles to change or even disappear or new ones to grow when in your 20's and 30's.

If the colour is the only change then there is less chance your mole is cancerous, also, as mildblue says, it's less likely if hairs are growing from the mole.

75% of patients referred to dermatology are given a clean bill of health, as happened first time around with Lu, so the odds that you will all have melanoma are very low but they still need checking out.

Mildblu - it's good that your surgery have a GP that specialises in dermatology as they may be able to put your mind at rest without having to go to hospital. If they think they need to check it out they will look at it under a dermascope - this is what a dermatologist at the hospital would use - it shows if there are any changes in the cell structure of the mole. If there are no changes then it's benign. If they are unsure or they see any changes they will then refer you to dermatology who will take another look and more than likely remove the mole (not necessarily on the day) for biopsy.

Katieb, you will probably be asked to send photos to your GP who will then either tell you it looks fine or refer you to dermatology for a proper examination.

Lu, I hope your results are back for next week's appointment and that they come back clear.

Good luck to you all & please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)

  • Hey

    Just to give an update

The GP who is specialised in this area called me this morning and was pretty sure the mole was fine from the pictures I sent, but just to be 100% he booked me in for an appointment earlier today. He checked the mole under a dermatoscope ,found the mole patten and said it was all fine. Huge relief!

Thank you AngieT for the reassurance and the information you said did help me feel more calmer. Anyone else reading this Don’t spend hours on google like I did and worry yourself, just get it checked out and you will feel 100 times better.

  • I'm so pleased to hear your news Mildblue and thank you for your advice to others about getting it checked out instead of Googling. xx
