Dad's prognosis? Help?

So my dad had swelling in his legs in December and after lots of tests has been diagnosed with liver (bile duct) cancer. He is preparing to have resection surgery but they are unsure if he is fit enough. He is currently going to the gym and trying to get his lungs well enough (they diagnosed low emphysema) he won't let me in to any of it. My sister in law goes to all his appointments (I live 280 miles away) but I want him to give consent for me to speak to his team so I know what is happening. What do I do? He keeps saying to ask my sister in law but I am never given full information. I understand that he wants to protect me but I am going insane not knowing. They don't know if he is well enough to have the surgery and if not it is palliative. That's all I know really. I just want to know what is happening. I'm sorry if if this is not the place to ask what I should do but I haven't found anywhere suitable so far. Thanks if you have any answers

  • Hi Penguinfeet,

I'm sorry to hear the news about your Dad. It sounds as if it's a very uncertain and unsettling time for you all at the moment.

You mention that the medical team are unsure if Dad is fit enough to have his surgery at the moment so it may be a case that they don't have answers to all your questions. I wonder as well, if as you are living quite a distance away, if he is trying to protect you to a degree from the situation.

We do have a team of nurses here at Cancer Research UK, and they may be able to help with some generalised information about your Dad's type of cancer. If you think it might be helpful to talk with one of them, then they are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040 (free to call from a UK landline).

    Sending our best wishes,
