Hello Andy and thanks for your post

I was sorry to learn about your wife. This must be a tough time for you all.

Although you posted in the ‘ask the nurses’ section other members do join in and I see a couple have already. You could also try posting in some other topic areas if you think that would be helpful.

You asked about CBD oil and if it is safe for your wife to use for pain relief.

I can appreciate you want the best symptom control for you wife at this time. I think she needs to talk to her team about wanting to use CBD oil .From my understanding it does not have a licence to be used as a treatment. This is because the active ingredients in cannabis which are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are still being researched as a possible treatment for cancer.

Because of this the oil will not be something that is regulated like other medications, so you will not be fully aware of its contents. I’d imagine the medical team would not want her to use this due to the potential unknown side effects that could occur due to a possible interaction. So far there isn’t any evidence gathered through research to show it is an effective cancer treatment. You may find this page here on our science blog interesting.

I wondered if your wife is under the care of the palliative care team. This may be a Macmillan nurse. These nurses are based in the community. Their area of expertise is advising on cancer symptoms, such as pain control as well as offering patients and family emotional support. You can read more about their role by clicking here . If she would like this support then her GP or the hospital can refer her.

I am sorry I can’t be more specific.  Do get back to us if  you have any other questions.

Best Wishes,

Celene

Hi Andy,

I'm so sorry to read about your wife's situation. I hate to sound negative, but Rick Simpson and his oil is pretty controversial on both sides of the Atlantic.

At best he's considered a miracle worker with a wonderful cure, at worst as a snake oil salesman and a charlatan, worse case his family is allegedly making millions from the desperation of people with cancer. There don't seem to be many people in between these extremes.. These two sites act as a balance to the RSO enthusiasts.

If you do go down this route, there's a couple of FB pages which warn about the scammers who have been ripping people off with fake oil ... https://www.facebook.com/stopthecon/   https://www.facebook.com/RSO.Frauds/

My own views on this don't matter, I'm not a scientist just a patient, I'd just hate to keep quiet and then somehow feel complicit in some sort of deception, however well intentioned.

Best wishes

Dave
