Can't believe I'm on here - terrified of a colonoscopy!

26 Jun 2018 22:07

This is the 1st time ive posted as a patient, this is so unreal. I feel a bit f a wuss too as ive not yet been diagnosed yet, but this is a nightmare - ive been referred for a colonoscopy as i have had the runs for 5 weeks.  Went to the docs thinking it might just be a bug or something & i was shocked that he shoved his fingers up my bum & has now referred me to hospital for this in only 2 weeks.  Never been in hospital before, never been an 'ill' person!!!! IM ABSOLUTELY ******** myself - literally! HELP!  As my poos are actually getting harder & bigger I'm wondering if i should go??  I'm 58, but are a fit runner,  healthy and don't smoke or drink & eat lots of fruit & veg. I even ran the London Marathon for a cancer charity !

Hi Grahm,

Go, know, take control.  That is my advice to you.  It is probably nothing but you should be checked out if the doctor recommended it. I had one at age 50 and was cleared from  having another one for 10 years. I was a former smoker and a cervical cancer survivor so I was scared, but I am glad I did it!  Good Luck!

Hi There, I’ve read and been told that the vast majority of colonoscopies show nothing bad. But it’s so much better to be checked out as if it is a cancer it’s much more treatable if spotted early on. I’ve had three colonoscopies because of changes in bowel habits and also because lots of  cancer in my family. They all came up negative. The procedure is undignified but painless and, keep in mind, the surgeon has seen lots and lots of bums! Good luck, keeping fingers crossed it’s nothing.

Hello Graham

please don’t run away from this, a colonoscopy isn’t sore I had one a couple of years ago and would gladly do it again.

your health is important and as you know everything that is caught in early stages is much better to treat, you never know, you might get the all clear and you will be so relieved like I was.

Thanks for your reply. I've left a note for my doc telling him that my poo is back to normal -(true) and asking if he still thinks i need on? His decision and i will go with whatever he says. Important thing is that i dont take up a slot for someone who really does have cancer!

update: Doc thinks i should still go so i will reluctantly. At least as my poo is now normal it won't be the big C so i feel much happier - probably just a bug.  If it doesnt hurt, do you think i can do without the drugs so i can cycle there and back?   Nice weather for a ride!  Happy

Well, I am glad you are going to go through with it. I don't know about cycling there and back but I had no ill effects from the procedure.  Went right back to normal activities. Let us know what the results are!

Thanks both of you. The cycling bit was just bravado - still scared. Also got the runs again. I'm a bit worried that as i don't have anyone with me or picking me up, i will have to have it done without the sedation or Entenox. It says i need to have someone with me if its bad news e.g. they have to send a sample off or its big already, as i won't remember what was said. But as i will be on my own, i need to be with it.  Is it painfull without the drugs?  Also I have quite a walk to and from the rail station on way home and can't really afford a taxi.   I suppose i'll just have to brave??  I'm working the trip to the hospital into my marathon training - I'm doing a tough one in September and will also be raising money for CR UK again!

Thanks everyone. My appointment came up (2 week referral whatever that means?),  but was'nt a colonoscopy, just another doctor who again shoved his fingers up my bum!  (getting a bit of a habit this - i did tell him i already had the T-shirt for that, but no he wanted his bit of the action.

Now go to wait another 15 days for the ***** colonoscopy!  Just wondered as i still don't have anyone to go with me (Q violin!), if i'll be Ok to get a bus to the train station or at least call a taxi afterwards?  Also as i probably won't remember what they tell me about biopsies, lumps etc., if i can record the conversation?  Oh & if any runners on here - i have 10k road race the day after - if i rehydrate & take plenty of gels & electrolyte, if i'll be OK to run?  It's been postponed once already cos of snow & it's a club championship & I'm looking good for a prize!   Might be the last one for a while if the **** hits the fan?  Would like to make it a running weekend of both sorts!   Happy

PS I walked past the Oncology ward on the way back to the car and saw a poor sad looking lady in a wheelchair being pushed - so thin and pale. She also looked younger than me - after i got in the car I cried like a baby......
