Cancer Survivor

Hi.

I had cancer when I was younger I had ALL. I had a cancerous mole removed last year, fortunately it was basal cell carcinoma.

The last 6 weeks I have picked up 4 infections. It's very unlike me to pick up that many. I initially had a cold for about 8 weeks then I had a chest infection, 2 days later I had tonsillitis. 2 weeks later another throat infection and now I've got shingles. I'm just thinking this isn't normal for me. Is it because something bigger is going on? Thoughts are going through my head. Why is my immune system so low atm? Its normally pretty good considering having cancer. If anyone has any advice. Thankyou. I hope everybody is ok xcc

  • Hello and thanks for your post

For most people the immune system recovers over time after cancer treatment. But some people may always be susceptible to picking up infections.

I would let your haematologist or GP know about your recent infections and how it is affecting you. They may do a blood test to check if your white blood cell count is low. There is a particular type of white blood cell called neutrophils. If they are low it can make you vulnerable to picking up infections.

Eating a well balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables and getting enough sleep can help boost your immunity. The organisation Blood Cancer UK have information on eating well here

I hope you feel better soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things through. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
