Can my mum pay my sister to help care for her

Hi,

My mum was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer which has spread to her liver and lungs in April. On top of this she also has dementia and heart failure so all in all not a well lady.

She has 4 daughters (one she lives with) and 2 of us hold power of attorney for her.

She has started to deteriorate fast and is currently suffering from a chest infection and being treated with antibiotics. If these don't work the doctors say that we will have no choice but to "let nature take its course".

She has personal careers come in to help dress her etc which she pays for with no state help but now requires 24hr care so my question is can she pay my sister (not a daughter who has Power of Attorney) to care for her? My sister doesn't have a full time job but works for an agency doing supply teaching as when they need her but would not be able to accept any agency work if looking after mum?

Any advise would be much appreciated.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Chrissy although I'm sorry to read about your mum's situation and for the reason you find yourself here.

I have included some general information about carers and finances on the Macmillan website for you to have a look at but to find out whether your mum can pay your sister to care for her, I would recommend giving Macmillan a call so you can speak to their financial advisers. Their freephone number is 0808 808 00 00 and their lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 8p.m.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Chrissy,

Steph has suggested you contact MacMillan - I found their local benefits adviser was really helpful.

You might also want to try the Alzheimer's Society as your main issue seems to be about the rules surrounding power of attorney and they will be well placed to answer those questions as it is a pretty common dementia care situation.

    Best wishes
