Blood transfusions, diagnosis, surgery in morning, ? next

So my dad's just been diagnosed with colon cancer, I have no idea how intense the tumour is and won't know until medics remove in tomorrow's operation at the hospital. He's had [I think] 4 maybe 5 blood transfusions already to correct the level of low red cells he had in his body then after months of stomach pain and one whole-body CT Scan, they diagnosed him with having Colon Cancer, so I'm wondering what happens after surgery? I've never did this before with any family member and I'm struggling immensely to come to terms with what could happen to my dad over the next 24/48 hours. Please help.

  • Hello Sarah and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm very sorry to hear about your dad and I can understand that you are struggling to come to terms with what could happen to him during and after his surgery.

There is some information from our website I'd like to share with you on bowel cancer and its treatments (surgery included) and I hope this will help a little.

Also, if you feel like speaking to one of our cancer nurses might help please know that their line is open Monday - Friday between 9 a.m - 5 p.m and you can reach them by ringing this phone number: 0808 800 4040.

I hope all goes well for your dad today, Sarah. And once you have a minute do come back and let us know how you both are doing. We'll be thinking of you.

    Warm wishes,

  • Hi there, thanks for your reply.

The surgeons at the hospital conducted my Dad's surgery this morning, he was then put into recovery around 8.30pm, from what I was told over the phone my Dad's medics have no major cause for concern what with his operation being a success so I'm happy for that - my next question now lies around healthy eating/dieting and progression on from surgery, what can a cancer patient eat with type 2 diabetes?

I look forward to reading your feedback.

    Warmest regards,

    Sarah, Carer
