Appointments and Advice

Hi all,

I’m relatively familiar with cancer as I know people with the condition. A couple weeks ago my mum felt a lump in one of her breasts, she got an appointment at the doctors and the doctor also felt this lump. She’s been getting increasingly worried and stressed about what she fears may be breast cancer.

Today has been a bad day for her as she feels sick and has pins and needles up and down her arm. I know she hasn’t been officially diagnosed with cancer however I am worried. I asked her when she could go to the hospital for a scan and for further checks and she was told organising an appointment could take months. I’m not happy with this as I know the sooner found then the better it can be for the patient.

I was thinking about phoning the doctors tomorrow on her behalf and asking if I can arrange an appointment ASAP however, as I’m not 18 yet I’m unsure if I’m eligible to do that. If anyone knows who I should contact or what I should ask any advice would help, I also don’t know whether or not to speak about it openly with my mum yet as I’m sure it’s still a really sensitive topic.

Thannk you all in advance x

It should not take months - my mum saw the GP and an appointment to see breast clinic was arranged within 2 weeks. Phone the GP's and ask when an appointment has been made for her to see a specialist.

has your mum spoken to you about all of this?

Hello and thanks for posting on the forum,

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling worried about your mum and I understand that you want to do everything to help her.

Many people worry that symptoms they have made be caused by cancer but there can be many different reasons for her different problems.

GP's are very experienced at seeing patients with lumps and bumps and I am sure they would refer your mum to a breast clinic if they felt it was necessary.  If your mum has new symptoms it would probably be a good idea to suggest she goes back to her GP to let them know. It is her GP who would need to refer her to another specialist if they felt that that was necessary.

Try not to worry too much.  Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Best Wishes,

Catherine
