Anyone taking Fucoidan brown seaweed to help get through chemo

14 Jul 2014 19:39

Searching the web found that Fucoidan can help the immune system when having chemo with other good results. I would love to know if anyone else has heard of it and if so how much do you have to take. Im BC triple negative with bone mets and will try anything.

Hi Nikki,

The best advice I was ever given was not to Google things when stressed! Not advice I've always followed, but it is good advice!

Seriously there are so many snake oil salesmen out there it makes me very angry.

A well-balanced diet and common sense will go a long way. Anything you can do to relieve stress will help restore your immune system, far more than anything else I can think of apart from a good diet.

There's a good article on this at http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/cancer-help/about-cancer/what-is-cancer/body/the-immune-system and on http://www.breastcancer.org/tips/immune/boost

Cheers

Dave

Hello Niki,

I hope you don¿t mind, the moderator asked that I post something.

Although some laboratory research has shown that fucoidan might prevent the growth of cancer cells, no research has been carried out in clinical trials in humans.  So I think it is far too early to say that supplements containing fucoidan can help to treat cancer or help to boost the immune system for people having cancer treatment.

The Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in America has some useful information about this on their website here.

I would be cautious about using this product because some researchers have suggested that it might increase the side effects of blood thinning drugs, such as warfarin (a commonly prescribed drug).  So I would certainly check with your consultant before taking this.

If you are interested we have some useful information about complementary therapies on our website here.

I hope this helps.

Take care,

Helen

Hi Dave

Thank you for the information I found the links very interesting, one of the things I have been stressing about is going on denasomab, I found a some trials that had been completed in 2010 suggesting they were safe and more effective than Alendronic so I will consider it for helping my bones. It would be nice to think that if we ate all the right things to boost our immune system it would control cancer.

Thanks

Niki
