Hi Sofia,

Sorry I am a bit late with today's quotation. This one is by Maya Agelou and I think this one applies to you Sofia and a few other ladies on here.

"Be a rainbow in someone else's cloud".

There are so many sad stories on here and yet there are people on here that although suffering from the effects of cancer themself's still find time to brighten our days. That is how I interpret this quotation.

As I am late, I will make up for it with two quotes. This one is by Napoleon Hill.

"If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way".

This is my personal take on this. Cancer often robs us of the big things we wanted to do in our in our lives. So we have to lower or change our expectations from life or take a different route altogether. But that doesn't mean we should lower our standards and not put all we have into achieving what we can do. I do think that sometimes having cancer make us much more determined to achieve something. It may not be what we had originally wanted to do but things are still achievable.

Please take care, regards Brian

Good morning everyone,

Just thought after being so late yesterday, I had better get this done earlier today. This quotation is by Maya Angelou and I thought how appropriate it is to this forum.

"The idea is to write it, so that people hear it and it slides through the brain and goes straight to the heart".

When we respond to people on here, that is what we need to do to make our replies more effective.  I believe if we write it from the heart, which I know most people do, it is much more likely to help the person who needs our help. Just like children and animals instinctively know who likes them, people instinctively know when we write things from the heart and this is more likely to lift their spirits.

Please take care everyone and have a good weekend, kind regards Brian

Good morning all,

The quotation for today is by Albert Einstein. I really like this one.

"There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is though everything is a miracle.

Some people seem to live their lives and do not appreciate the beauty that surrounds them and the good friends and family they have. I myself have been guilty of this in the past to a certain degree. Since the morning I was told I had prostate cancer, it has opened my eyes and made me realize what I have and how lucky I am. Its often said we dont know what we have until we lose it. I think the same applies when we realize we could lose it as well.

I see things through different eyes now. Also coming on here and reading of so many people so much worse off than I am has also opened my eyes even further and has heightened my appreciation of all the good things in my life that I have.

Have a happy weekend, Brian

Hi,

Here is my latest qoutation for today. This one is by Ralph Waldo Emerson and I think is another one that fits this site admiralbly.

"The only way to have a friend is to be one"

Since joining this forum in late May I have made contact with so many wonderful people who now I regard as good friends. Although we may never meet, I enjoy the conversations we have on here and look forwards to many more.

Have a good day, kind regards Brian.

10 Dec 2012 11:18 in response to sofia

Good morning people,

Right near the start of this thread, one of our wonderful moderators Renata recalled a quotation she had remembered from her school days by Hellen Kellor. This one is by the same lady.

"When one door of happiness closes another opens, but we often look so long at the closed door, we do not see the one which has opened for us".

I have myself seen this happen to people I know over the years. I also believe that everything that happens in our live's has a reason. I have recently met a man who has over the years lost two wives to cancer and he had to give up work to bring up his two daughters. He found there was no help for careres at the time so he has set up a charity called Cancervive which I have now joined. I recently overheard him say, he believes he was meant to lose his two wives so that he would set up that charity group and I applaud his positivity. All I can say is he made that new door open for him to help others.

Please take care, best wishes to all, regards Brian

Late again,

Sorry folks, been busy today. This quote is only six words long but nevertheless I like it a lot. Probably because my aging mind can remember it easier. It by Abraham Lincoln.

It reads:-

"Whatever you are, be a good one".

This could apply to virtually anything, i.e,  a singer, musician, a poet or just a friend. I like to think of it applying to friends most of all, as I have heard of so many people on here say that when they were diagnosed with cancer, their friends have deserted them at a time when they were needed most. And that is not my definition of a true friend,

Kind regards Brian

I feel people here as really friends, I remember the day 15th October when I went to do the biopsy...when I was hospitalized I was so terrible down, I just feel the need to share with people on here that i  was waiting for the biopsy...my "daily friends" coudn't give me the support that I feel share my state of mind here

Good morning all,

Glad you liked that last one Sofia. As soon as I saw it, I thought of you. Just like my daughter-in-law thought of me when she saw a plaque with the words on it, "Welcome to the nut house". Just because I like nuts!!!!!!!!!!!

Its raining here in Sussex this morning and it's so dark, I have still got the light on to see what I'm typing. Todays quotation is by Marcel Proust.

"The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands, but in seeing with new eyes".

The part "Seeing with new eyes", applies to so many things in our everyday lives. When we or someone we love hear those words, "It cancer ", I believe we do see things with new eyes. Cancer has certainly done this to me. Little things which before didn't seem that important in my life have now become things that I cherish dearly. I think cancer does make us open our eyes and see things in a different light. It often not until we fear we may lose something, that its hits us how much we need that which we fear we may lose.

Please take care everyone, kind regards Brian.

Hi everyone,

My quote for today is buy our own lovely Sofia from Portugal.

"We try to help ourselves here and try to help other people, only by the comfort of a word which is spread by the amazing internet".

How true this is Sofia. Until I joined this site, I didn't fully appreciate just how much comfort can be obtained by a simple thing like a well intentioned word (or two). All too often when we start our cancer journey, wither as a patient or as a loved one of someone who has cancer, we feel so alone. But as Sofia has said, just by a comforting word from someone we may never meet, we don't feel so alone and overall we feel better as we know someone understands what we are going through, and what we are feeling. All this achieved by a simple thing like a word.

Well done Sofia, for making me appreciate this.

That is an Amazing Quote

Hope you all have a good weekend, best wishes from Brian.

I never commented on this quote (the quote you left by Helen Keller), I really liked her and still more of the story you shared .. and made me remember the story of Sophie van der Stap (I already told this girl here in chat). I read the book recently and it is very inspiring. she had cancer at age 21, a rare and aggressive cancer on lungs (spread to liver), had very little chance of surviving, but survived and is past 7/8 years.

She drew her life from cancer ... already wrote 3 books (the first about her experience during cancer, the second the realty after cancer), her story is already moving to film; she is helping young people who are suffering from cancer through workshops etc

she was able to see the door to open up!

I didn't mean to make you blush Sofia, but what you wrote was spot on and as I have said, since you wrote the first quote on here, I now really like reading quotes, especially one that suite this forum, and your fitted most appropriately. I hope you are keeping well Sofia.

My quote for today is by John Wilmot.. It reads,

"Before I gor married, I had six theories about bringing up children; now I have six children and no theories".

All i can say to that is, after having six children, he probably doesn't have the time or strength left to think out new theories.

Re: amazing quotes

16 Dec 2012 23:19 in response to woodworm

Hi Brian

Well, I have another interpretation (which is not totally different)...: when we havent experience we are always telling to the others how to do, "I would do that...not as you did etc" but when we had the reality we realize that the others have reason and our theories are just inexperience...
We see that all the time: people who doesn't have children are always the "good educators" but when they became parents they rarely act like they thought....
When we have cancer is the same...people are always saying "you couldn't cry; you couldn't do that...etc; if it was with me I wouldn't cry ;the hair is the less; a scar is the less; you are lucky because you survived so why you don't act like before? etc"

Thank you for the reply and your own interpretation. You are so right and I am in total agreement with what you wrote.

I know you like quotes by Helen Keller so here is another one for you.

"All the world is full of suffering. It is also full of overcoming".

I thought this quote so applicable to this forum for so many reasons. So many people on here are suffering loss of quality of life as a result of cancer. Yet not only do they still find a way to overcome their problems but yet also find time to reach out to others and try to help them. There are some truly amazing people one this site and you are one of them Sofia and I feel privileged to know you.

"What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never loose, for all that we deeply love becomes a part of us".

I have mentioned to several people on here who have recently lost loved ones that those they have lost have made them what they are and a part of them will live on inside of them. So this has just reinforced what I belive.

Have a good day everyone, kind regards Brian.

Good morning all,

Hi Pheonix, thank you for you kind words and glad you enjoy reading this thread.

This is my latest quotation. This one is by Lewis Carroll.

"If you don't know where your are going, any road will get you there".

My own interpretation of how it applies to this site is this.

Often people who have been diagnosed with cancer are not able, for one reason or another to follow the road they intended to travel. Often we lose site of what we wanted to do and are not sure what the future holds for us, so we tend to lose site of our ambitions and aims in life.

We may end up treading pathways we never intended to tread as a result. Something Sofia said recently I found so sad yet so inspiring at the same time. I cannot remember her exact words but I think it was something like this.Things she wanted for her future are not now possible but she will now make a new future for herself. This brought tears to my eyes but at the same time I realizes what an inspirational person she is.

Please take care everyone, best wishes, Brian.

Hey Brian,

I don't know how you remember my statements so well
But now that you referred this,  I have an idea of having written something like that... I have no idea where?!?!

You are rigth, the things I said about my dreams, it is indeed sad, because I worked hard for them...

And I used to say then when people just accept the changes it was just sad - a sign of suffering and that the Life had taken on the wings - but now I realize that adapt ourselves to the changing don't need to be seen as a sign of sorrow but of maturity, survival and hope!

When I refused to change after all changings caused by cancer, I could not fit me or did not do what I did before nor do that things differently, and simply locked me and suffered a lot! Today I try to seek happiness. And if happiness can't be the one it was before in my power, that is another.

We have to be creative ... the society also creates ideals of happiness and I really was already prevented from reaching some, but not want to imagine me to be a sad person!

Re: amazing quotes

Hi Sofia,

Before I write out my quote for the day I would just like to answer Sofia's question.

The main reason I remember your comments is that they are so beautifully written and are so heartfelt. I looked back but there have been so many new postings I couldn't find where you had written that. It is one of the reasons why I say your book will be so good for you have such a way with words that convey what you mean so beautifully Sofia.

My quote for today is once more by Helen Keller who has written so many good quotes.

"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched. They must be felt with the heart".

Love is the first thing that thought  that sprang into my mind when I read this. Love is something that encompasses so many things and where would we all be without love both for and from our fellow men and women. Love includes what we feel for our families, and the many wonders of our world, so many many things. We would all be the poorer if we didn't have love in our lives.

I feel so very sorry especially at this time of year for those who have no family and no one to care or love them. I could face life without many thing but without love in my life, I don't think I would want to continue.

But fortunately, I do have a lot of love in my life and I feel so lucky as a result. Last night I saw my three grandchildren and all three of them told me they loved me and it made me a bit teary which I just about managed to hide from them, as I told them, I loved then too.

Well must be off now to try and find some more quotes.

Have a great day everyone, take care Brian

Good morning everyone,

After all the rain we had yesterday, at the moment in Sussex the sky is blue with hardly a cloud in sight. Hope it continues as it was so dark at times yesterday we had to put the lights on at times.

Today's quote is yet another one by Helen Keller and I feel it was almost written for this site.

"The unselfish effort to bring cheer to others will be the beginning of a happier life for ourselves".

Sofia wrote just the other day something which ties up with this quotation. She asked me the other day why I remember what she has written. It's quite simple Sofia, you have a way with words that have so much meaning in them and that it makes them so hard to forget, even for someone like me with my worn out brain.

She wrote, "Seriously I think this chat has given me more than I have given". I think that is a very telling remark.

Giving to others always makes us feel good and being a small part of this site has made me feel good about myself.

Take care my friends, Best wishes Brian.

Thank you Brian for your kind words, it is always nice to receive compliments. I hope more people will think I have a way with words that has now put me on this adventure of writing ... and today I'm writing!

Helen Keller was indeed a very sensitive person and with a huge sense of life! Really she has immense and amazing quotes that fit here! I understand why you leave it here so many...

So I decided to leave another quote from Helen Keller, and once I love so much psychology I choose this one:

"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved"

Hi,

I also have to admit to developing a respect for quotes that I normally would have dismissed as nothing more than unimportant ramblings.

My quote this time;

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us"

Waldo Emrson

I am constantly amazed by the inner strength and determination shown by so many people.  When they have every right to just lay down and give up because of what has been dealt by "The lady that is life" ( I will always remember that sofia), they not only carry on but make the time and effort to help others, showing utter selflessness.

Respect to you all.

Hello everyone,

I wont say good morning today as it's pouring with rain at the moment.

My thoughts go out to those whose homes have been flooded, not just just overnight but over the past few weeks. I can hardly believe that in the early part of the year, we were desperate for rain and now we have too much!!!!!!!!!

Being as it is nearly Christmas, I though I would search out some Christmas quotations. This one which I really like is by Bob Hope and is as follows.

"My idea of Christmas, whether old fashioned or modern, is very simple; Loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that".

When I first read this I thought how true that is. What a better world this would be if everyone thought like this.

As it's nearly Christmas I thought I would treat everyone to two quote today. This second one is by Burton Hills. and reads:-

"The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree; The presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other".

I am in total agreement with those sentiments.

I wish each and everyone of you the best of Christmas and wish to thank you all for the friendship and love you have shown both to me and others on this great site.

Best wishes, Brian.

I can understand your previous opinion about quotes! I guess we just  se the beauty of that quotes on circumstances when we feel the need to express ourselves...when our life is just great and normal we can't tnhink to much, we can't reflect so we don't see the truth nature and  deepness of that kind of words.

Brian, thks for your Christmas quotes, they are a really good gift and they totally explains what is Christmas...when we go to shopping, when we saw televison during this period we rarely see the really meaning of Christmas, it's all about consuption!

After taking a break from this thread for a couple of days, here is my latest addition. This one is by Barbara de Angelis.

"Love and kindness are never wasted. They always make a difference. They bless the one who receives them and the bless you, the giver".

I have decided to do a "Read one, get a second one free" offer today. this next one caught my eye as it mentions trees. It's by St Basil.

"A tree is known by its fruits; a man by his deeds. A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love".

Let me just say, I know a chestnut tree very well by its bark, leaves and its prickly nut cases. As some of you may know, I just love chestnuts. I fact I like all types of nuts.

My wife is totally convinced I am the biggest nut of all, and I cant argue with her for I know she's absolutely right.

Hi Everyone,

Today's quote is by Audrey Hepburn.

"Remember, if you need a helping hand, its at the end of your arm, as you get older remember you have another hand. The first is to help yourself, the second is to help others".

I feel that this quotation can also be turned on its head. By using our second hand to help others, we can also help ourselves so we don't need to use the first so much. I have, since joining this forum often heard people say they have gained comfort for themselves by helping others. So I feel this quotation is so correct.

Take care, one and all, Brian

About "your" last quote it remind me another thing...lots of people here shows that they try to be "ok and put a brave face to the others" and then they feel very alone, insecure etc and that quote says "first we need to help ourselves"...I feel this as so true (and it's not selfish at all), when we are not fine we need to admit it for us..only before that we could help others, we coudn't understand any kind of suffer if we don't understand our own suffer...

And Brian, I'm so sorry for the things with your dad...I've been read about it, sorry...

Hello folks,

First of all, I want to say thanks to both Sofia and Garf for their kind thought regarding my father in Canada. Your concern is much appreciated, thank you both for you comments. Great quote by the way Garf.

Sofia, I know from what you wrote earlier in this thread that Steve Jobs is one of you heroes. So when I came across this quotation of his, I immediately thought of you.

" Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me. Going to bed at night and saying we have done something wonderful, that's what matters to me".

Speaking for myself, money has never been a major driving force in my life, as long as I have enough to get by that all that matters. I often remember that saying, "You can be the richest man in the world but it cant buy you happiness and love". I will never be a rich man if you look at things money wise, but with my family and friends around me and with the love they give, I feel like the richest man of all. On Boxing Day, my youngest grandson who is only seven when he found out he was just about to be taken home, went up to his parents, dropped down on his knees, put his two little hand together just like he was praying and said to his parents, "Oh do we have to go home? I want to stay here, please let me stay". It's little things like that that make me feel so happy and it's something I will never forget and will treasure for the rest of my life. It's wonderful things like that that make me feel like the richest man on earth.

Have a great day everyone and I wish you all little moments like that, Brian

Good morning everyone,

Its once again dull and dreary outside and keeps trying to rain here in Sussex. Which brings me nicely to my quotation for the day. Its by Charlie Chaplin and reads as follows:-

"You will never find a rainbow if your always looking down".

My late father-in-law always walked looking at the ground. Although he do find the odd few coins, they were only small change. He also looked down on people and never looked for the good things in life. I fully agree With Mr Chaplin on this one. If we spend our lives looking downwards, we will never see the beauty that surrounds us nor will we ever see the good in people.

Have a good day everyone, Brian

Good morning,

And at last I can say that with conviction, for at the moment there is not a cloud in the sky and its the start of a brand new year, a year that I hope will be a good year for everyone on this site.

My quotation for today is by Barbara Johnson.

"To be in your children's tomorrow, you have to be in their lives today".

For once, I have nothing to add to this except to say this is also true for grandchildren.

Take care everyone and best wishes to you all for 2013, Brian
