ADVISE Ultrasound results

3 Jan 2018 13:05

Yesterday I went for my internal and external ultrasound, my results are back already but my doctors urgery only has locum nurses in today so they won't tell me anything until my doctor is back. Is there any other way I can find my results out quicker, would the hospital I went to yesterday not give me them if I rang?

Thanks gemma x

Hello Gemma,

Thank you for posting a question.

I would imagine that it is somewhat frustrating to know that your results of your ultrasound  are available and no one at the surgery is able to  discuss things with you.  But I doubt that you will be able to get the results any way other than through your GP’s surgery, If they were the health care professional who ordered the tests. If your GP has referred you to a specialist who then ordered the ultrasound scan, then sometimes the hospital specialist might pass on the results.

I do hope that you are able to find out something soon, as waiting for tests investigations and results can be stressful.  As you have  posted on a cancer forum I would imagine that you are worried about cancer. Although I cannot rule it out completely any type of cancer is unusual in women of your age, as I understand from a previous post that you are quite young. So hopefully nothing too serious is wrong.

All the best,

Thank you for your message.

I had a call this morning from my doctor to say I have a 5 centrmetre mass on my left overy and the mass has been split into 2 with a gab down the middle. He also said that they couldn' actually see my left overy sack or falloian tube on my scan either. I k ow have to wait for my referra appointment. Have you ever come across anything like this before?

Many thanks

Hi Gemma

This could be an ovarian cyst, which is very common.  My wife had one of these some years ago. It was the size of a tennis ball, and was removed surgically. It was quite a difficult operation because the cyst adhered to some other structures, but my wife came through it just fine. The cyst wasn't cancerous.

Hello Gemma and thanks for getting back to us,

In truth, I am not really sure what the gap in the middle of the mass means, but in women your age (29) ovarian masses are unlikely to be cancer and the most likely explanation is some sort of cyst. I don’t think the fact that the left ovary and fallopian tube can’t be seen is anything to worry about.

It sounds like you have a referral appointment presumably with a gynaecology clinic, so hopefully they will be able to answer your questions and tell you more, I am sorry I can’t.

Most people who are worrying about abnormal test results go on line to try and figure out what is happening. This doesn’t usually help and can even be scary, so it is probably best to hang on for the appointment.

Take care,
