Advice for memory loss and disorientation

My step mum has anal cancer. We've been told that she has months left, not years, treatment has stopped. Problem is, none of us know what that means, and unless she goes into a hospice for a bit of respite, they won't study the progress now. So living with it.

I saw her today. She was chatty but tired and the main thing that struck me was she was disorientated. She kept losing her place in her sentences and this isn't like her at all. Then she went off to make tea and I heard her talking to herself.

I've seen friends pass from this disease but never been there for the latter stages. Can anyone tell me if this is all normal, or are they indications that it's not long now? Any advice gratefully received.

Thank you
