Advanced prostate cancer

Hi there,

my wonderful Dad has recently been diagnosed with Advanced Cancer PSA 1100, Gleason 9, stage 4.. We are utterly heart broken! He is such a healthy man, still working full time. He is 72. The funniest man alive! My children adore him!!

i suppose I’m hoping for some positive stories from anyone on here! Please please tell me we have many more years with him..

he is on hormone injections and started 6 rounds of chemo last week x

thank you for reading! Xx

  • Hi machelle   as long as you father can take the treatment he should be fine, I had same treatment June 2016 my psa was 1581 gleason 8 stage 4 it went from the prostate to the lymph nodes, spine, ribs, pelvis and I lung, its not curable you just live with it in near future he will nead more cemo, the idea is over first year psa continues to drop then as treatment wears off it rises again, mine my specialist wants to go to 20 before more treatment, it'll be permanent hormone therapy and side effects are a nucance hot flushes, and weight gain to name main two, good luck with your fathers future... Billy

P.s I've been living a normal life apart from getting older, aches and pains, I'm now 68years old

  • Oh wow!! That’s amazing... How did the chemo effect you? My dad ended up in hospital this week with a high temp/infection. The doctor said something about his consultant lowering the dose but surely this means that it will be less effective?

were you offered radiotherapy? My dad wasn’t, I guess that means it’s travelled too far!

Thank uou you so much for replying.. I wish you all the very best

    Michelle

  • Radiotherapy is aimed at certain areas, Cemo goes everywhere so is more effective, yes I had problems with the side effects i have other med conditions and it reacted bad on 4th session I finished up in hospital for 8 days going in and out of a coma (not very nice), but it was worth it, i brobably would have died in 2016 without cemo, dropping dose will be less effective but he can still have more later,, sorry things are not going well, but see what happens when treatment finishes, there's other reatments out there, they might mention to you if you ask, he could be OK with what he's on know, you don't know yet, good luck... Billy

  • Good grief! You poor thing.... I had no idea chemo Was so scary!!

So how often do they check your psa levels now? Dads chemo finishes in October and we are praying he will Be well enough to go to Florida next July for a month. - he’s favourite place in the world! Do you think they would want to do more chemo during that time? We have no idea of when the next lot would be offered.

    Thank you for replying x

  • My check is every three months its not critical unless psa rises quickly, last check on me was1.8 it's been down to 0.03 last year thats what I mean it goes down so long then rises then cemo goes down again, never ending circles, very boring really, it's a bit nerve racking when it rises but not much choice, hope your father gets sorted soon, best wishes... Billy

P.s my specialist doesn't want to give me any more cemo till psa gets around 20,.

  • Thank you, you’ve been so helpful.

last question I promise!- how many rounds of chemo have you had? And do you know how close you can have the next lot if you needed another course?

    Michelle

  • It's no good promising you might think of something else don't worry i don't mind, I've only had one cemo up till now brobably have some next year, but my oncologist thought I'd need more before the end of first year so I've been very very lucky, so normally it nearly every year, but I'll have been four, so you can see how much treatment can vary with different people, nobody knows why, any way good luck with your father. Don't forget any more questions your welcome, sometimes it helps to talk about things, sort of let it out, best wishes.... Billy
