adrenal cancer

Hi,

just 4weeks ago i had to go to hospital, because i started to have health issues that i never experienced before. In hospital i got diagnozed with cushing's syndrome and after doctor did scan, she found a tumor in my left adrenal gland 14cm in seize. My endocrinologist put me on the treatment with steroids- because my adrenal gland was producing way too much cortizol, my heart rate was very high, my skin was very red and very slowly to heal, bones broke so easily.... but she told me that an opperation is necessary to remove the tumor.

So 2weeks ago i had an amazing surgeon operate on me. He took out the tumor that was already 20cm big in size and had 2.5kg.  He had to take out my left adrenal gland, spleen, a part of my stomach, a part of my pankreas and a part of my diaphragm. He tought that he will need to remove my left kidney but thank god that he didn't... At the moment i am in recovery after operation, the doctors are waiting for results from the tumor to know exactly what steps we will need to take. They also found small nodules in my lungs and stomach fat, but they say that could be treated through radiation or chemotherapy once we know more about the nature of tumor. The doctors told me that this type of cancer is very rare- the Adrenal Cancer.

I am wondering, is anybody here with this type of cancer? or do you have a family member that was diagnozed with it? what did they do? how do they feel? how do they cope?... I would like to talk to somebody perhaps you can share your insights. your story. I know we all are different, but i am just wondering if there is anybody that had to go through this...?

  • Hello Lostris and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

It must have been a really stressful few weeks for you - and 14cm that is quite a large tumour. It's good that things moved quickly and the surgeon was able to operate on you - incredible that it had grown to 20cm in size and weighed 2.5kg. It seems to have been quite a big operation and I hope that you are recovering well from it. Once you get your results, you will be able to find out more about what your treatment plan is exactly.

There is information on our website on adrenal gland tumours which I hope you find useful. I hope that you will hear from others on the forum who have been diagnosed with the same rare cancer before and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you. If you click on our search forum function in the blue banner at the top and type in 'adrenal cancer', you will be able to find other relevant threads on the subject and hopefully meet others who have had a similar diagnosis in the past. I had a little look for you and found, for example, this thread by [@dillos]‍ whose husband had an adrenal cancer diagnosis and where other members who had a similar experience responded and shared their story.

I hope that you will be able to connect with others here who understand what you are currently going through. It does help to talk to others who are in a similar boat and to feel less alone with this rare cancer diagnosis.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Lostris!

At this point you are around 4 months post op...how are you doing? I have been diagnosed with a 18cm adrenal tumour and was told it would be a 3 month recovery from surgery. I hope you are feeling recovered from that and have some strength back before further treatment.

I potentially have this type of cancer. But won't know for sure until they do tests on the tumour post op.

I hope you've been able to find support and others going through this. It's difficult when there are few cases a year. I don't know if this would interest you but my counsellor recommended to me an Amazon Prime film called Heal. I haven't watched it yet but she suggested it might help mentally to see others getting better after serious illness.

To answer your question no one in my family has had adrenal cancer. Its just guesswork as to why this formed. I have my own theory but this won't apply to everyone.

    Sending healing vibes ️
